Colors are an essential part of vocabulary in any language, and French is no exception. Understanding how to use colors in French involves not only
knowing their names but also how to agree them with the nouns they describe in terms of gender and number.

Using Colors in Sentences

When using colors to describe nouns, the color adjectives must agree in gender and number with the nouns they describe.

Masculine Singular: "noir" agrees with "le chat". Feminine Singular: "blanche" agrees with "la maison".
Les fleurs rouges (The red flowers) Les toits verts (The green roofs)
Feminine Plural: "rouges" agrees with "les fleurs". Masculine Plural: "verts" agrees with "les toits".

Special Cases and Invariable Colors

Some colors, such as "orange" and "marron," are invariable. They do not change regardless of the gender or number of the noun they describe.

Des sacs orange (An orange bag) Des chaussures marron (Brown shoes)
"Orange" does not change. "Marron" does not change.

Describing Shades and Tints

To describe shades and tints of colors, you can use words like "clair" (light) and "foncé" (dark).

La robe est bleu clair. (The dress is light blue.)

Common Expressions with Colors

Voir la vie en rose (To see life in pink - to be optimistic)

Elle voit la vie en rose. (She is optimistic.)

Être vert de rage (To be green with rage)

Il est vert de rage. (He is green with rage.)

Avoir une peur bleue (To be very scared)

Elle a une peur bleue des serpents. (She is very scared of snakes.)

Rire jaune (To laugh falsely or forcedly)

Il a ri jaune quand il a compris la blague. (He laughed falsely when he understood the joke.)
