The document discusses transmission lines as circuit elements, highlighting their role in guided wave propagation with controlled impedance and low loss. It outlines key parameters such as resistance, inductance, conductance, and capacitance, and explains the behavior of open and short-circuited transmission lines. Additionally, it introduces the Smith Chart as a tool for analyzing transmission line characteristics.

ELECTROMAGNETICS MODULE 5 TRANSMISSION LINE AS CIRCUIT ELEMENTS (L AND C) • Transmission lines are designed to support guided waves with controlled impedance, low loss, and a degree of immunity from EMI(Electromagnetic Interference). • Transmission lines or Wave Guides are commonly used in power distribution at low frequencies and communication at height frequencies. • A transmission lines basically consist of two more parallel conductors to connect a source to a load. E.g. ,twisted pair, coaxial cable TRANSMISSION LINE PARAMETERS • Resistance per unit length ,R. Unit is Ohm • Inductance per unit length ,L. Unit is • Conductance per unit length ,G. Unit= • Capacitance per unit length ,C. Unit= DISTRIBUTED PARAMETERS OF TWO WIRE TRANSMISSION LINE TRANSMISSION AS CIRCUIT ELEMENTS • Transmission lines act as a communication channel at normal frequencies. At very high frequencies of 300MHz to 3GHz it act as circuit elements line inductor and capacitor. • Consider a lossless transmission line Zo=Ro. Then the input impedence ,𝑍𝑖𝑛 will be There are two different parameters to define transmission line circuit elements Open Circuit Line (Z ) -For open circuit line (Zin)oc=-jRocot𝛽𝜄
This input equation shows that the input
impedence of an open circuited lossless channel is purely reactive.
It can be capacitive or inductive depending
upon the values of 𝛽𝜄q
From the figure (a) input reactance of open
circuited transmission line is 𝑋𝑖𝑛 =-Rocot𝛽𝜄.
Thus Zin is the impedance of capacitor.
Short circuited line(𝑍𝐿 =0) For short circuited line impedance will purely inductive or capacitive. The input reactance Xin=-R𝑜tan𝛽𝜄 𝛽𝜄 vary from -⋈ to +⋈ So Zin =jRotan𝛽𝜄 =j𝑥𝑖𝑛 SMITH CHART HOW IT WORKS text
