INTRODUCTION
This sixth volume of John Dee's Libri Mysteriorum consists
entirely of a book "in the angelicall language" which was revealed
in the scrying stone. Dee is told it is "a Book of Secrets and Key of
this World". Most of the book consists of tables of letters and
numbers, each having forty-nine columns and forty-nine rows. Dee
is told,
"God shall make clere whan it pleaseth him: & open all the
secrets of wisdome whan he unlocketh. Therfore Seke not
to know the mysteries of this boke, tyll the very howre that
he shall call thee. For then shall his powre be so full
amongst you, that the flesh shall not be perceyued, in
respect of his great glory." (April 18, 1583)

"Oute of this, shall be restored the holy bokes, which haue


perished euen from the begynning, and from the first that
liued And herein shalbe deciphred perfect truth from
imperfect falshode, True religion from fals and damnable
errors, With all Artes; which are propre to the use of man,
the first and sanctified perfection: Which when it hath spred
a While, THEN COMMETH THE ENDE." (May 5, 1583)
I believe that the details of its production reveal a lot about its
nature, so I will recap them briefly.
The bulk of the text from this book is taken from Sloane
manuscript 3189. However that manuscript does not contain the
complete text. The earliest parts of the book are recorded in Sloane
manuscript 3188. They were revealed using an elaborate and time
consuming method: Kelley read the name of each letter one by one,
and Dee wrote them down. Later, they were written out in Roman
letters. Kelley was temporarily endowed with a mystical
understanding of the book for a time, and was able to give notes on
pronunciation and translate some words and phrases. Apparently
part of the problem with this method was that Kelley had not
memorized the alphabet (for which he and Dee were chided by the
angels) and presumably had to refer elsewhere for the names. This
method is later abridged, and Kelley simply read the names (or
Roman equivalents) and Dee wrote them down in Roman letters,
thus omitting the names of each letter. This method was also too
cumbersome, and in the end Kelley wrote the rest down himself
resulting in Sloane Ms. 3189.
An early copy of this ms. can be found in Sloane Ms. 2599,
possibly by Elias Ashmole.
It should be noted that, as the method for receiving the text was
simplified, it deviated from its stated design, i.e. the rows did not
appear to all contain forty-nine letters. These discrepancies were a
great concern to Dee, and he asked frequently for help in
reconciling them. The result was a series of editorial corrections
and complete renumbering. In Sl. 3189 the individual rows do not
appear to have been marked, and "+" and "*" were added later to
denote the ends of rows. The renumbering was not incorporated
into Sl. 3189 for some reason.
On June 18, 1583 Dee records the following details regarding the
book (Δ designates Dee himself):
"Touching the Book, it shall be called Logah: which in your
Language signifieth Speech from GOD. Write after this sort
LOAGAETH: it is to be sounded Logah.
The word is of great signification, I mean in respect of
ther profoundnesse thereof.
The first leaf (as you call it) is the last of the Book.
And the first leaf is a hotchpot without order; So it
signifieth a disorder of the World, and in the speech of that
Disorder or Prophesie.
Write the Book (after your order) backward, but alter not
the form of the letters, I speak in respect of the places.
E.K. Now a beame shooteth through him from the Stone
and so through his head and out of his mouth, his face
being from E.K. toward Δ.
...... Write the 49. You have but 48 already.

that by degrees came a second beame, and a third beam of
light into Galvah from the Stone, and all the three together
appeared: the third participating of the other two.
The second beame came at the word Larb, pronounced;
when also Frogs and Serpents appeared, &c. The third
beame upon the word Exi pronounced. Note also, that the
manner of the firy brightnesse was such, and the grisely
countenances of the Monsters was so tedious and greivous
and displeasant to E.K. that partly the very grief of his
minde and body, and partly the suspecting the Creatures to
be no good Creatures, neither such greivous sights
necessary to be exhibited with the Mysteries delivered unto
us, had in a manner forced him to leave off all: But I again
with reasonable exhorting of him, and partly the
providence and decree Divine, wrought some mitigating of
his grief and disquieting.
Gal. ...... These are these seven.
Δ... . What shall I do with these 21 words now received;
Gal. ..... There are onely the words of the first leaf.
Δ. I pray, how shall I bestow them, or place them.
Gal. ..... In them is the Divinity of the Trinity.
The Mysterie of our Creation,
The age of many years.
And the conclusion of the World.
Of me they are honoured, but of me, not to be uttered:
Neither did I disclose them me self: For, they are the
beams of my understanding, and the Fountain from whence
I water.
Δ. I beseech you, how shall I write these names in the
first leafe.
Gal. ..... They are to be written in 5 Tables, in every
Table 21 Letters.
Δ. How shall I place the 5 Tables upon two sides: three
in the first, and 2 in the second, or one in the first, and 4 in
the second, or how else?
Gal. ..... As thou seest cause.
Δ. Shall I write them in Letters of Gold?
Gal. ..... The writing hath been referred to thy discretion
with collours, and such things as appertain to the writing
thereof. Upon the first side write three Tables, and on the
second two."

Notes from Sl. 3188:


"In tyme thow shalt finde it, in ADAMS Treatise from Paradise."
The alphabet is referred to as "those letters of our Adamicall
Alphabet". They "represent the Creation of man.... They represent
the Workmanship wherewithall the sowle of man was made like
unto his creator." (Apr 28. 1583). It is "a language towght in
Paradise .. by infusion, to Adam. ... Nothing remayned of Enoch
but (and if it please your mastership mowght haue byn carryed in a
cart. I can not bring you the brass, but I can shew you the bokes.
Sleep 28* dayes, and you shall fynde them, under your pillow
whan you do rise." (Apr 18.) Since the time coincided with the time
Liber Loagaeth was to be completed, Dee took this to mean Liber
Loagaeth was the book of Enoch referred to by the angel.
"Enoch's tables", however, refer to the four tables described in
TFR.

I have provided the numbering of leaves, rows, and columns for
convenience. They are not included in the original manuscript. Dee
is told the first transmitted leaf is the last, which implies they
should be renumbered 49b, 49a, ... 2b, 2a. This lack of numbering
makes it harder to understand the complex method of extracting the
so-called Enochian "keys".
The orthography seems too close to English for a language that is
preported to be ancient, e.g. use of 'th', 'ch', 'ph' as presumed
graphemes. It also seems odd that it was transcribed in English
letters, when the original letter shapes were known early, and it
would seem easier, less error prone, and to better satisfy the intent
to copy what was seen than transcribe into a more ambiguous
script. Kelley's handwriting in particular makes it difficult or
impossible to distinguish u and n, and occasionally e and l, c and r,
x and p, c and t, and others. There is another observation of the
manuscript's peculiarity that might add evidence to the theory that
it was not copied letter-by-letter from a prototype. This is the
multiple series tables where it is clear from the size of the letters,
the slant, and the continuity of pen strokes that the paper was
reoriented.
One possibility is this: The angels told Dee the book must be
finished in a certain number of days. From the orientation of the
letters on the 8 central leaves and the observation that the series
seem to have been done at different times, it seems possible that
Kelley started skipping every other letter to save time, and make
the committed date, and then went back to fill in the missing
squares as time afforded.

The Book of Enoch,

This writing begining (not at [Arney Vah] etc. but) at Oxar Varmol is the 2nd Page of the
first leaf of the famous Book shown in the stone, which consisted of 49 lines or Rows &
every Row of 49 words or letters. The first 40 of this Page have a word in every little
square which could not wel be contained in the little Cells of a square table in this Book —
Therefore they are writ thus at large as you see. But the 9 last Rows of this Page had but
one Letter a piece, & are accordingly set down at the end hereof, pag. 5. All the other
leaves of that Book had but a single Letter in each little square & so they are set down, as
here after follows in this Book. Vide l.5 Ms. pag. 142, 143 etc.
The first Page of that first Leaf is not (it ought to be) all transcribed here before this 2nd
Page save only the 49, or last, Row beginning (Arney Vah etc.) But they may be seen (& (if
thought fit) copied out thence) in l. 5to Ms. p. 150, 151, etc. [The preceding note is by Elias
