SSC202 Lecture 10
LECTURE 2
Computing science is the study of computation, information, and automation. It is a broad term
encompassing theoretical foundations and practical applications, such as software and hardware
development. It involves understanding how computers work and using that knowledge to solve
problems and create new technologies.
Computing is a generic term for anything/anyone using a computer. It delves into the principles
and algorithms that enable computing, stretching beyond the realms of mere computers to
include any computational systems. There are various programs in Computing Sciences.
5) Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and data from digital attacks,
unauthorized access, and damage. It is a crucial field in today’s tech-driven world, where threats
like malware, phishing, ransomware, and data breaches are increasingly common. Key areas in
cybersecurity include:
● Network security: Protecting the internal network from intrusions
● Application security: Securing software from vulnerabilities.
● Information security: Safeguarding data privacy and integrity
● Ethical hacking/penetration testing: Managing and mitigating breaches or attacks
● Cryptography: Encrypting data for secure communication.
ASSIGNMENT
Class discussion: Relation of Computing program to a Department
Task: Discuss at least one program in computing sciences that could be beneficial to your
Department, stating its intersection and importance.
