PROGRAMS IN COMPUTING SCIENCES

Computing science is the study of computation, information, and automation. It is a broad term
encompassing theoretical foundations and practical applications, such as software and hardware
development. It involves understanding how computers work and using that knowledge to solve
problems and create new technologies.
Computing is a generic term for anything/anyone using a computer. It delves into the principles
and algorithms that enable computing, stretching beyond the realms of mere computers to
include any computational systems. There are various programs in Computing Sciences.

1) Computer Science

Computer science is the part of science that studies the knowledge related to computers,
computability, algorithms and software. Computer science covers many areas that are abstractly
related to computers: graph theory, calculus, game theory, and automata theory.
Computer science is a subset of computing. It is usually focused on what can be done, how it
may be done, how fast it can be done, what algorithms may be used, how they may be used, as
well as studies of how algorithms are created, how decisions are made, how accurate those
decisions may be, even the limits of what can be decided.

2) Information Technology (IT)

Information Technology (IT) is the use of computers, and related digital technologies to manage,
process, store, and information. It focuses on the practical application of technology to solve
real-world problems in business, communication, education, healthcare, and more. Below are the
importance of IT in modern society:
● Business: Automates processes, enhances communication, and increases efficiency.
● Education: Enables e-learning, digital classrooms, and resource access.
● Healthcare: Manages patient data, supports telemedicine, and medical research.
● Government: Facilitates e-governance, secure data storage, and communication.
● Everyday Life: Powers smartphones, banking systems, GPS, online shopping, and more.

3) Software Engineering (SE)

Software engineering is the field focused on the design, development, testing, maintenance, and
evaluation of software systems. It encompasses various software development methodologies,
including Agile, Waterfall, and DevOps, and covers many domains such as web development,
mobile app development, and systems programming. It involves applying engineering principles
to create reliable and efficient software solutions.

4) Data Science

Data science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, algorithms, and systems to
extract insight and knowledge from structured and unstructured data. It combines elements of
statistics, computer science, and domain expertise to:
● Collect and clean data
● Analyze data using statistical models and machine learning
● Visualize data and communicate findings effectively
● Build predictive models for decision-making

5) Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and data from digital attacks,
unauthorized access, and damage. It is a crucial field in today’s tech-driven world, where threats
like malware, phishing, ransomware, and data breaches are increasingly common. Key areas in
cybersecurity include:
● Network security: Protecting the internal network from intrusions
● Application security: Securing software from vulnerabilities.
● Information security: Safeguarding data privacy and integrity
● Ethical hacking/penetration testing: Managing and mitigating breaches or attacks
● Cryptography: Encrypting data for secure communication.

6) Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence is the field of computing science focused on building machines and systems
that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Some major branches of AI
include:
● Machine learning (ML): Systems that improve from experience. E.g. Recommendation
engines, spam filters.
● Deep learning: A subset of ML using neural networks, especially for tasks like image or
speech recognition.
● Natural language processing (NLP): Understanding and generating human language
● Computer vision: Teaching machines to “see” and understand images or video.
● Robotics: Integrating AI into physical machines.

7) Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)

Human-Computer interaction is the study and design of how people interact with computers and
technology. It is a multidisciplinary field that combines elements of computer science, design,
psychology, and cognitive science to make systems more usable, efficient and user-friendly. HCI
is essential in everything from smartphone apps to VR experiences, wearable devices and smart
home interfaces.

8) Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services (such as storage, servers, database,
networking, software, and analytics) over the internet (“cloud”), allowing users to access and
use them on-demand without owning the physical infrastructure. Cloud computing is about
shifting from owning and maintain physical hardware/software to using computing as a utility,
much like electricity. Instead of buying servers, storage, and setting up your own data center, you
rent what you need from a cloud provider over the internet. Major cloud providers include:
Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, IBM cloud, Oracle
Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud.

ASSIGNMENT
Class discussion: Relation of Computing program to a Department
Task: Discuss at least one program in computing sciences that could be beneficial to your
Department, stating its intersection and importance.
