Subject: Mathematics

Grade: 3

Time: 5x60 mins

Date: October 22-25, 2024

Strand: Numbers

Topic: Addition with renaming up to four digits

Focus Question:

Attainment Targets
● Use basic operations with number and number patterns

● Know the value numerals and associate them with their names,
numbers and ordinals

Objectives: Each child will:

● Add numbers up to four places with renaming

● Solve simple algebraic problems (continue)

Skills: listening, speaking, working together as a team, think critically

Materials: computer etc, place value chart, pencil, books, ruler, Youtube,
Prime Mathematics, counters for grouping, paper, activity booklets

Vocabulary: addition, increase, total, sum, altogether, in all, addend, rename,

regroup

Lesson Content: Addition (+) is one of the four basic operations in

Mathematics. It is the process of combining two or more objects to get a final
sum.

Renaming is a concept in mathematics that is taught to elementary-aged school

children, usually around grade three or four. It teaches students the importance
of breaking whole numbers down to their tens and ones etc. in order to do a
myriad of mathematical computations.

Explanation:

Exploration:

Let children watch video and explore the renaming process

Expand
Class will work together to solve renaming problems using the place value
chart.

Example1:
7ones + 8ones = 15 ones. They will be directed to rename the 15 ones to one
group of ten and 5 ones, after which they will give the one group of ten to the
tens group and make an imaginary tens column.
7
+8
1 5

Example 2
78 + 19
T O 8+9 = 17; rename 17 ones to 1 ten and 7
7 8 ones. Bring the one group of ten to the
+1 9 tens column and add to the tens
9 7

Evaluation:

● Children will be placed in groups and complete renaming problems,

after which they will present and reflect. (See activity sheet for different
ideas).
Further Activities
Move to three and four places if possible.
Solve simple algebraic equations using addition.
Give key and have children use the substitution method to solve. Example:
If n = 6, what is n + n +n?

1. Make an addition song or poems

2. Add together 12, 3 and 238

3. Increase 345 by 45

4. One box contains 123 eggs, another box has 3481. How many eggs are
there in all?

5. Examine the set of numbers below, then add the third and fifth numbers.
234, 86, 567, 13, 28

6. Add 234 and 58 then write the sum in expanded form.

7. Use 134 plus 456 to make a word problem.

8. If N = 2, what is 29 + N?

9. Add together 5, 8 and 9. Use the place value chart.
