D1 Maths Notes - Surface Area & Volume, Algebra, Time and Speed

Page 1: Surface Area - Basic Concepts

Key Formulas:

- Cube: Surface Area = 6a^2

- Cuboid: Surface Area = 2(lb + bh + hl)

- Cylinder: Surface Area = 2pir(h + r)

- Sphere: Surface Area = 4pir^2

- Cone: Surface Area = pir(l + r) where l = slant height

Example Question:

1. Find the surface area of a cylinder with radius 3 cm and height 7 cm.

Answer: 2pi x 3 x (3 + 7) = 2pi x 3 x 10 = 60pi cm^2

Page 2: Volume - Basic Concepts

Key Formulas:

- Cube: a^3

- Cuboid: l x b x h

- Cylinder: pir^2h

- Sphere: (4/3)pir^3

- Cone: (1/3)pir^2h

Example Question:

1. A cone has a radius of 4 cm and a height of 9 cm. Find its volume.

Answer: (1/3)pi x 4^2 x 9 = (1/3)pi x 144 = 48pi cm^3

Page 4: Algebra - Chapter 5 (Quadratic Equations)

Standard Form:

- Quadratic Equation: ax^2 + bx + c = 0

Factorisation:

- x^2 + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)

Quadratic Formula:

- x = [-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

Page 5: Algebra - Completing the Square

To solve: x^2 + 6x + 8

-> x^2 + 6x + 9 - 9 + 8 = (x + 3)^2 - 1

Practice:

1. Solve x^2 + 7x + 10 by factorisation.

2. Use quadratic formula to solve 2x^2 + 3x - 2 = 0.

3. Complete the square: x^2 + 4x + 1
