SILICON CAPACITIVE ACCELEROMETER https://youtu.be/ZLjlDpIr0DA
• Silicon Capacitive accelerometers, also known as vibration sensors, rely on a
change in electrical capacitance in response to acceleration.

• Accelerometers utilize the properties of an opposed plate capacitor for which

the distance between the plates varies proportionally to applied acceleration,
thus altering the capacitance
For example,
• in automotive applications, accelerometers are used to activate the airbag
system.
• Cameras use accelerometers for active stabilization of pictures.
• Computer hard drives also rely on accelerometers to detect external shocks
that can damage the read/write head of the device.
• Accelerometers are used in most robot navigation systems as sensors for
robot speed and localization. Normally, these accelerometers sense the
body acceleration, which is integrated to determine the robot velocity, and
cumulatively the robot position relative to the starting position.

SILICON CAPACITIVE ACCELEROMETER

• An accelerometer is an electromechanical device that is used to measure

acceleration forces. Such forces may be static like the force of gravity or, they
may be dynamic as in the case of mobile devices.

• An accelerometer comes in the form of a simple circuit for a large electronic

device.

• The accelerometer is made of different parts and works in many ways, two of
which are the Piezoelectric Accelerometer and the Capacitance Accelerometer.

•Accelerometers are made of multiple axes – two axes to determine

two-dimensional motion with an option for a third for 3 D positioning.
Smartphones make use of the three-axis model while cars make use
of the two-axis to determine the moment of impact.

SILICON CAPACITIVE ACCELEROMETER PRINCIPLE

• The capacitance accelerometer senses the changes

in capacitance between microstructures.

• If the accelerative force moves one of these microstructures,

the capacitance changes and the accelerometer translates this
capacitance into voltage for interpretation.

• A capacitive accelerometer works by measuring the

displacement of the inertial mass through the change in
capacitance between the inertial mass and the frame

Applications of Accelerometer

• Accelerometers in laptops protect the hard drive from damage. If the laptop were to
fall while in use, the accelerometer would detect the fall and immediately turn off
the hard drive to avoid hitting the reading heads into the hard drive platter.

• Accelerometers in cars are used to detect car crashes and deploy airbags
immediately.

• Smartphones rotate their display between landscape and portrait mode depending
on how one titles the phone.
