Installing Visual Studio Code


Installing via apt

The proprietary repository and key can also be installed manually with the following script:

curl https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc | gpg --dearmor > microsoft.gpg

sudo install -o root -g root -m 644 microsoft.gpg /etc/apt/keyrings/microsoft-archive-keyring.gpg


sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64,arm64,armhf signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/microsoft-archive-keyring.gpg] https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/vscode stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vscode.list'

Then update the package cache and install the package using:

sudo apt-get update


sudo apt-get install code # or code-insiders

Install via snap

You need to install snap by running:

sudo apt install snapd

To install VS Code via snap, using the following commands:

sudo snap install code --classic

To run VS Code

sudo snap run code

Install via flatpak

You need to install Flatpak

To install VS Code via flatpak, use the following command:

flatpak install flathub com.visualstudio.code

To run VS Code

flatpak run com.visualstudio.code

VS Code without MS branding/telemetry/licensing

Be aware that many popular extensions are proprietary (e.g. Dev Containers/Remote Debugging, Github Copilot, ...) and are not available in the extension marketplace configured for Codium. There is also no guarantee
that they will work even if installed manually).

Installation instructions

Install via apt

To install it follow this guide:

Install via snap

You need to install snap by running:

sudo apt install snapd

To install codium via snap, using the following commands:

sudo snap install codium --classic

To run codium

sudo snap run codium

Install via flatpak

You need to install Flatpak

To install VS Codium via flatpak, use the following command:

flatpak install flathub com.vscodium.codium

To run VS Codium

flatpak run com.vscodium.codium
