Lab 04 - Quarter Car Modeling
Lab 04 - Quarter Car Modeling
Objective:
To understand the concept of quarter car modeling and its applications in vehicle dynamics
Introduction:
In this lab, we will explore the dynamics of a quarter car model, which is a simplified representation
of a vehicle's suspension system. The suspension system plays a critical role in ensuring a smooth
ride for passengers, reducing the impact of bumps and shocks on the road.
In this lab, you will learn how to develop a mathematical model of a quarter car system, analyze its
behavior and the practical applications. You will also explore different parameters and how they
affect the performance of the system. The lab sheet will guide you through the process of developing
the model and simulating it using software tools.
Materials:
MATLAB/Simulink software
Theory:
Quarter Section,
Chassis 1/4
Suspension (1/2 of axle mass)
Wheel (Mass of 1 wheel )
Road
Calculations and Simulations:
Wheel position – Zw
Zr
Chassis vertical position – Zc
Discussion:
1. Study the effects of different parameters on the quarter car model and selecting optimum
suspension parameters and discuss the reason to select them
2. Discuss the applications of quarter car model in vehicle dynamics
3. Discuss the limitations of the quarter car model
4. Compare the quarter car model with other vehicle models
