Speed Distance Acceleration Notes
Speed Distance Acceleration Notes
1. Speed
Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance. It is a scalar quantity.
Formula: Speed = Distance / Time
SI Unit: meters per second (m/s)
2. Velocity
Velocity is speed with direction, making it a vector quantity.
Formula: Velocity = Displacement / Time
3. Acceleration
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity over time (vector).
Formula: a = (v - u) / t
5. Motion Graphs
Distance–Time Graph:
- Straight Line: constant speed
- Steeper: faster
- Horizontal: stationary
- Curved: acceleration
Velocity–Time Graph:
- Horizontal line: constant velocity
- Slope up: acceleration
- Slope down: deceleration
- Area under graph: displacement
Acceleration–Time Graph:
- Horizontal above x-axis: constant acceleration
- Below x-axis: deceleration
- Area: change in velocity
Practice Questions
1. Basic Calculations
a) A car travels 150 km in 3 hours. What is its average speed?
b) A sprinter runs 100 meters in 9.8 seconds. What is their speed?
c) A train accelerates from rest to 20 m/s in 10 seconds. What is its acceleration?
3. Graph Interpretation
A cyclist’s velocity-time graph: 0 to 10 m/s in 5s, constant for 10s, then to 0 in 5s.
a) Total time?
b) Total displacement?
c) Average speed?
Answers
1. Basic Calculations
a) Speed = 150 / 3 = 50 km/h
b) Speed = 100 / 9.8 ≈ 10.2 m/s
c) a = (20 - 0) / 10 = 2 m/s²
3. Graph Interpretation
a) Total time = 20 s
b) Displacement = 25 + 100 + 25 = 150 m
c) Average speed = 150 / 20 = 7.5 m/s
