MATH 231, Spring 2025, Practice Problems Final Exam

Professor: L. Carichino
• Final Exam is on Monday May 5th , 4:15-6:45pm EST in GOS 1250.
• Bring your ID the day of the final exam.
• The Final Exam will be comprehensive of all the material covered in class. At least
50% of the Final Exam will be on Laplace Transforms.
• All the WeBWorK, in-class Quizzes and recitation worksheets problems are representa-
tive exam problems. Solutions are posted on online.
• The following problems are representative of the problems on the exam, to give you
an idea of the setup, format and type of questions.
• The solution of the following problems will be posted online the week before the final.
• Material not on these practice problems may be on the Exam (i.e. these
practice problems do not include all material).
• Review Sessions:
– Tuesday, April 29th , MATH-CRASH session, 12-2pm GOS 1250 (pizza at 1pm and
1:45pm is offered by the Math Department in the GOS Atrium A-level).
• Dr. Carichino office hours for the week before the final will be posted on myCourses.

Practice Problems

To practice on the material included in Exam 2, please look at

(1) Practice Problems for Exam 2 posted on myCourses and its solution.
(2) Solution of Exam 2 posted on myCourses.

To practice on the material we covered after Exam 2, please use the following problems.
(1) Use the definition and properties of the Laplace transform.
(a) Evaluate the Laplace transform of f (t) = 2t4 − 3t + e−5t + cos(5t) and specify its
domain.
(b) Evaluate the Laplace transform of f (t) = et cos(3t) and specify its domain.
(c) Evaluate the Laplace transform of f (t) = 5t sin(2t) and specify its domain.
(d) Let f (t) = et t5 , evaluate the Laplace transform of f (t), f ′ (t) and f ”(t) and specify
the corresponding domains.
(2) Find the inverse Laplace transform of the following functions F (s).

2s + 16
(b) F (s) = 2

with initial conditions y(0) = 0, y ′ (0) = 3 using
(a) Laplace Transform
(b) Method of undetermined coefficients
(c) Method of variation of parameters
