1. What security risks are you facing? (Please include details of the most recent security incidents that
have led you to apply for this grant)
As student leaders at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), we Darlington Matola, Linos Munogweyi, and
Prosper Chingozho are facing severe security threats due to our activism against unjust university
policies, including exorbitant tuition fees and administrative repression. Our advocacy has provoked
retaliation from both university authorities and state security, putting our safety at grave risk. Thus we
are now hoping from one position to the other for safety such that our presence will not be
compromised hence we don’t have a safer accomodation for the moment.

1. Targeted Surveillance and Intimidation

We are under constant surveillance, monitored by unknown individuals on campus. Suspicious knocks
on our doors at night, shadowy figures following us, and anonymous threats have become a daily reality.
This is a clear strategy to silence us through fear.

2.The dean of students Directly Threatening Us

The university Dean of Students has personally called us, threatening expulsion and even death. His
threats are not empty words student activists in Zimbabwe have faced abductions and violence before.
His involvement proves that this repression is coming directly from university leadership, working hand
in hand with state forces to destroy student activism.

3. Forced Disciplinary Hearings Without Due Process

On March 16, 2025, security forces attempted to force Matola into an unannounced disciplinary hearing.
The university is abusing its disciplinary system to punish activism, disregarding procedural fairness and
justice.
4. Lockout as a Weapon Against Activists

On March 24, 2025, Matola was locked out of his university accommodation without notice. The lock on
his door was changed, barring him from accessing his personal belongings. Now, the same tactic is being
prepared against Linos Munogweyi and Prosper Chingozho. This is a calculated attack, meant to
destabilize us and force us into submission.

Please give full description of security risks you facing *:

2. How have security risks you are facing impacted your ability to carry out your human rights activities
and/or your wellbeing and/or that of your organisation / collective? *

The administration sponsored persecution is evicting us from the school premise thereby denying access
to our clothes, toiletries even a place to sleep. We are being hunted down so that they force us to sign
eviction papers which is leading to our hide. Threats of expulsion are being sent yet we are having
scripted interrogations and hearings with a verdict before their end

Access to education has been compromised as we are missing lectures at a state university whose
culture is to suppress open and due criticism .

Fear of abduction, fear of death itself especially in the context of ongoing political tensions in the
country. Our activitsm is mistaken for a movement towards ongoing efforts to remove the government .
We are not part of that and our only crime is to advocate for a conducive environment for students to
access education.

3. What measures do you propose? * (Press Ctrl/Control key and click to select more options or deselect

Legal support

Individual security

Basic needs

Temporary relocation to a safer environment

Solidarity

How will this help to reduce the risks and help you to manage your security situation?

1. Relocation to a Safer Environment

Moving to a safer location is critical to avoid constant surveillance, intimidation, and potential harm.
Remaining in university accommodation or areas where state security forces and university officials can
easily target us increases our risk of abduction, physical attacks, or further harassment especially in the
context that university security is barring us from university premises . A secure location will allow us to
continue our advocacy without immediate threats to our safety. We wish to forge with the legal
proceedings while we come from a secure space away from university and home as these are easy
targets for attacks.

2. Legal Assistance & Defense

The university is using disciplinary hearings and legal intimidation as weapons against us. Having legal
representation ensures that we can challenge any unjust actions, protect ourselves from arbitrary
expulsions, and fight back against persecution in court if necessary. Lawyers can also intervene in
emergencies, such as unlawful arrests or forced removals from campus.

3. Personal Security Measures

Given the direct threats to our lives, personal security measures are essential. This includes securing safe
transportation to avoid ambushes and ensuring we have basic protective measures in place. Security
risks increase when student activists are left vulnerable and without protection.

4. Basic Needs & Academic Support

Forced lockouts and persecution are affecting our ability to focus on academics. With financial support
for essential needs such as food, accommodation, we can remain resilient and continue our studies
despite the hostile environment. Many student activists have been pushed into poverty as a punishment
for speaking out this support would prevent that from happening to us.
