PANEL
DISCUSSIONS

09
www.internationalscl.com
Spearheading Sustainability: An overview on
PANEL
resilience in supply chain
DISCUSSION - 1

The discussion began by noting how customer expectations in the supply chain have evolved, with inventory availability
and marketing playing key roles. The current supply chain model involves partnering, competing, and collaborating.
Panelists shared strategies for meeting rising demands for speed and efficiency while maintaining profitability in contract
management.

TMS software was highlighted for its role in optimizing route management and delivery operations, adapting to road
changes and improving cost efficiency. Despite advancements, paperwork remains a challenge, prompting industries
to adopt digitization using QR codes for efficient tracking. Emerging technologies like AI and IoT are transforming freight
management by streamlining processes, improving decision-making, and enhancing predictive maintenance, emissions
control, and driver well-being, though their effectiveness varies across industries.

Futuristic Outlook: Application of IT & automation in
PANEL
logistics & supply chain industry
DISCUSSION - 2

The discussion highlighted how IT automation is transforming supply chain planning by simplifying complex processes,
enabling faster, data-driven decisions, and improving efficiency, cost savings, and flexibility. However, companies face
challenges like high implementation costs, system integration, data security, and workforce adaptation. To overcome
these, they can focus on phased implementation, robust cybersecurity, employee training, and selecting scalable,
compatible solutions.

Warehousing remains central to supply chain efficiency, supporting inventory management and distribution as automation
enhances other supply chain functions. Recent global shipping shifts, like increased inventory and supplier diversification,
reflect a move from “just-in-time” to “just-in-case” strategies in response to disruptions. The rise of e-commerce has
driven the adoption of technologies like route optimization, real-time tracking, and delivery drones, improving productivity,
delivery speed, and reducing costs. Companies can also lower logistics costs by transitioning to electric vehicles, sharing
data with partners, and using crowdsourced delivery platforms for last-mile solutions.

Latest trends in the logistics industry in India:
PANEL
Way forward
DISCUSSION - 3

The discussion highlighted key trends reshaping logistics, such as increased adoption of automation and AI for optimizing
routing, warehouse management, and demand forecasting. There is also a strong focus on reducing the carbon footprint
through electric vehicles, alternative fuels, and energy-efficient warehouses, as companies strive for greener practices to
meet regulations and consumer demand for sustainability.

‘Logistics-as-a-Service’ (LaaS) is gaining popularity, offering flexibility by outsourcing logistics without large infrastructure
investments. The quick-commerce sector’s demand for ultra-fast deliveries is pushing the logistics industry to optimize
last-mile delivery with advanced technologies, gig workers, and automation. The industry is also moving towards hyper-
automation with AI, robotics, and autonomous delivery vehicles to further streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

Warehousing 2.0: Revolutionizing supply chains with
PANEL
smart logistics and robotics
DISCUSSION - 4

The panel highlighted warehousing as the nerve center of business operations, emphasizing the significant ROI of
warehouse automation in reducing fixed costs like labor and utilities while enhancing efficiency. By speeding up processes
and minimizing errors, automation not only cuts expenses but also improves operational accuracy. Effective inventory
management and the use of technologies like Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), automated picking, and real-
time tracking help maintain optimal stock levels, leading to faster order processing, better space utilization, and overall
cost savings.

The discussion also underscored the necessity of a skilled workforce in logistics and Warehousing 2.0. Citing a McKinsey
report, the speaker noted that 40% of the workforce lacks skills for advanced automation, increasing the demand for
expertise in robotics and AI. He advocated for educational partnerships between logistics companies and institutions,
urging businesses to invest in specialized training programs to prepare their workforce for future challenges and maintain
competitiveness in the industry.

Last Mile Delivery: A brief discussion on increasing
PANEL
the efficiency & challenges to overcome
DISCUSSION - 5

Offering adaptable delivery options, such as flexible time windows and rerouting, can enhance customer satisfaction
but presents internal and governmental challenges. Operational complexity can lead to inefficiencies, higher costs, and
coordination difficulties among departments. To address this, companies can implement advanced route optimization
tools powered by AI and machine learning, allowing real-time adjustments based on traffic, customer preferences, and
vehicle availability. Other internal challenges include technology infrastructure, inventory management, visibility, cost
implications, and communication.

Governmental challenges arise from regulatory restrictions, such as driving hours and emissions regulations, particularly
in urban areas, which can limit routing flexibility and increase costs for fleet upgrades. Additionally, the gig economy’s
nature leaves delivery workers without benefits like healthcare or job security, resulting in stress and high turnover. To tackle
these issues, there is a growing demand for better policies that provide fair wages, safety measures, improved working
conditions, and mental health support, including predictable scheduling and proper rest breaks for delivery personnel.

14
#ISCLSUMMIT2024
Logistics scenarios: Challenge facing transportation
PANEL
and logistics companies.
DISCUSSION - 6

The logistics industry is undergoing major digital transformations with technologies like AI, IoT, and blockchain reshaping
operations. AI enhances demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and route planning, while IoT enables real-time
tracking, boosting supply chain transparency. To leverage these innovations, companies should collaborate with tech
partners, focus on data analytics, and ensure security compliance. Integrating sustainability into logistics through green
technologies and stakeholder collaboration improves network efficiency, meeting regulatory and consumer demands.

Cost-saving innovations, such as automation, AI-powered route optimization, and collaborative logistics, reduce labor
and operational expenses. Sustainable practices, like eco-friendly packaging and electric vehicles, further streamline
operations. Regulatory changes, such as emissions standards and labor laws, can raise transportation costs by requiring
fleet upgrades and stricter compliance. To manage these expenses, companies can adopt sustainable practices and
capitalize on government subsidies and incentives aimed at supporting eco-friendly logistics solutions, balancing
compliance with profitability.

15

Public Private Partnership: To improve country’s
PANEL
logistics performance
DISCUSSION - 7

Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) combine private sector efficiency and resources with government support to accelerate
infrastructure development, particularly in underdeveloped regions. By leveraging private expertise and investment, PPPs
can expedite the construction of vital projects like roads, bridges, schools, and digital connectivity. Balancing infrastructure
growth with safety is essential in a rapidly developing country like India. This requires strict safety standards, thorough risk
assessments, and advanced technologies like AI and IoT for real-time monitoring. Phased development, worker training,
and public awareness can further mitigate risks, alongside third-party audits and penalties for non-compliance.

The relationship between GDP and road traffic density highlights that improved infrastructure boosts economic
productivity. However, GDP can be vulnerable to infrastructure quality and investment delays. PPPs play a crucial role
in ensuring continuous investment, bringing in private sector innovation, and distributing risk. This approach enhances
infrastructure development, fosters economic resilience, and reduces vulnerabilities associated with infrastructure gaps.
Ultimately, PPPs can facilitate sustainable and inclusive growth by addressing regional disparities and improving service
delivery.
