ACT ONE, SCENE ONE
Yemi’s apartment, it is a small, living room with one hallway leading to two
bedrooms inhabited by Gbenga and Yemi. The living room is furnished by
two sofas and a center table, with a hunchback TV mounted on a small shelf.
Gbenga is tensely pacing around the room, a look of worry on his face and
Yemi sits on the sofa, also looking worried as he shifts from one end of the
sofa to another as if contemplating something important. There is a tense
atmosphere and a sense of worry in the air.
Gbenga: [Starting to pace more violently] But I told you Yemi, I told you that
all these things ar going to get us into trouble one day, didn’t I? I said it, One
day, all these habits will put you in deep trouble, but what I didn’t expect
was that you would drag me into it with you.
Gbenga: NO, I listened to you and that’s what has gotten us into this mess
now, You and your stupid advice, your stupid partying ways, your stupid
friends and their stupid addiction to illegal drugs. You got me into this mess
and I don’t want to hear anything else from you, unless it’s a solution.
Yemi: It’s not my fault Gbenga, and you can’t blame me for wanting to finally
get you out of the house. It’s all that security man’s fault. If he didn’t report
us, we’d be in the clear.
Gbenga: [Shouting] You mean we’d still be students. If you didn’t drag me to
your friend’s “safe” party, I wouldn’t have been in this situation in the first
place. What is safe about using using illegal drugs Yemi? WHAT IS SAFE
ABOUT THAT?
Gbenga: The what? The security man you paid to make sure we weren’t
caught? The same security man that snitched us to the authorities who got
us rusticated? He works for the school Yemi! What did you expect, you guys
can’t pay him as much as the school does can you? And who was the fool
that came up with the bright idea to throw a party with drugs on the school
campus.
Yemi: Gbenga, don’t stress me, this is worrying me too. It’s not like I love the
idea of being rusticated either, it was Victor’s party, he’s right one that
invited me, it’s no like I would have just gone without reasons. If I knew there
was going to be drugs there, I wouldn’t have invited you on the first place.
Gbenga: Who is this Victor boy again, it’s even your friend that I don’t know
that put me in trouble. Someone I don’t know personally, put me in trouble,
Ah! Gbenga you have messed up.
Yemi: He’s the one you should be angry at, he’s the one you should blaming.
He brought the stuff that put us in trouble. You know I don’t mess with that
kind of thing. It’s just not how I am.
Gbenga: Don’t lie to me Yemi, it’s not like I haven’t seen your stash in the
drawer in your room… JESUS CHRIST, you’re going to get us arrested, you
even have a stash in your room. Yemi go and get rid of that thing now.
Yemi: [standing] Gbenga, I said don’t stress me o, it’s affecting you the same
way it’s affecting me. We’re in the same predicament, so please, respect
yourself.
Gbenga: It’s like my village people sent you to me, tell them you didn’t see
me o, You got me into this Yemi. We’re not in the same predicament, if I get
my blood tested now, I’ll be clean, now go and get rid of that thing before it
causes someone to get injured here today.
Yemi: See, leave me alone Gbenga, I’ve had enough of this, all I did was try
to help you out of your comfort zone and see what happened. Honestly, you
may even be the one that caused it, we’ve done this type of party many
times, so why is it when you finally show up to one of them that we get
caught.
Gbenga: Yemi, are you hearing yourself, I didn’t even want to go, you forced
me to go and you’re here bragging about doing this successfully many times
before I came. What is wrong with you this guy? What did I get myself into by
associating myself with you. I should have known you were a trouble magnet
from the beginning.
Yemi: The way you’re talking right now is the reason I forced you out in the
first place, it’s the reason you don’t have the friends or the vibes I have. This
argument or altercation is not what we need right now, it’s not going to solve
anything. Shouting at me won’t provide a solution. The school is probably
already typing the rustication letter to send to our parents at this moment.
Yemi: Relax guy, Your mom probably doesn’t even know how to use G-mail,
she’s using a button Nokia, those kind of phones don’t even use g-mail. You
told me she was using a button phone. I feel like we don’t actually have to
worry about the letters.
Gbenga: “we” don’t have to worry? Your mom uses an iPhone 15 Pro Max
Ultimate plus or whatever they call it. I’m pretty sure she knows how to open
an email.
Yemi: I know, but guess what… The school doesn’t have my parents’ email,
the address I gave them was a fake one. They have no way to reach my
parents, even the phone number I put there was fake.
Gbenga: Yemi, the way you are saying this thing, it’s like you feel that you’ve
solved everything, (grabs him by the shirt) I’m still in this mess because of
you. I’m still rusticated from school because of you. I swear I’m going to –
Yemi: (frees himself from Gbenga) I TOLD YOU VIOLENCE WON’T SOLVE
ANYTHING !!! Instead of you to sit down and let’s brainstorm on our next
move, you’re here trying to get yourself into more trouble. Beat me then,
beat me to a pulp and see what happens, beat me and see if it’s going to
solve anything.
(As he finishes his sentence, there’s a knock on the door and Victor enters,
he talks with Yemi at the door for a while then he goes over and sits on the
edge of the sofa opposite Gbenga.)
Gbenga: (To Yemi) You just went to open door for anybody, Who’s this guy
please .
Yemi: This is the guy I told you about before. You don’t remember Victor?
Gbenga: Wait, this guy here is Victor. The Victor that did that party with
Illegal contrabands on SCHOOL CAMPUS?
Victor: You’re Gbenga right? I heard what happened and I just wanted to
come and-
(As he’s talking, Gbenga lunges at him and starts raining blows on him. Yemi
finally manages to separate them)
Yemi: What’s your problem guy, Victor, let’s talk outside, leave this guy
alone and let him be venting to himself.
