ENGLISH II

CONDITIONALS
TYPE OF CONDITIONALS: ZERO CONDITIONAL

• Things are generally true: laws or facts.


• Structure: If + present simple, Present simple:
• Examples:
• Ice melts if you heat ice: If you heat ice, ice melts.
• When/If the sun goes down, it gets dark.
• If you mix red and blue, you get purple.
• If you heat wáter to 100 degrees, it boils.
• If I’m tired, I go to bed earlier.
FIRST CONDITIONAL

• To talk about a realistic situation in the future


• Structure: If + subject + present simple, Will/won’t + verb
• Examples:
• If you study hard, you Will pass the exam.
• If it’s sunny today, we’ll go to the beach.
• She Will be sad if her boyfriend leaves.
• I’ll wash the dishes if you cook the supper
• Instead of If you can use Unless (except) in the first clauss:
• Unless you hurry up, you won’t catch the bus.
• I’ll carry on doing this job, unless my boss tells me to do something else
• We’ll stay at home, unless the weather improves.

SECOND CONDITIONAL

• To talk about a hypothetical situation


• Things in the future that are probably not going to be true. Maybe I'm imagining some dream for example.
• we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible
• is kind of conditional sentence is different from the first conditional because this is a lot more unlikely.
• Examples:
• If I were you, I would(I’d) drive more carefully In the rain.
• If you had a very fast computer, it wouldn’t take more than a few seconds to download that program.
• Univesity would allow students to surf the net from many different places if the university installed Internet Wireless..
• If I took that job, I wouldn’t drive an hour each way to work,
• If she saw a snake, she’d be terrified.

If I HAD more money, I'd travel more. (have)

• 2What would you do if you FOUND a lot of money in the street? (find)

• 3A lot of health problems could be prevented if people ate better (eat)

• 4If I had her number, I COULD CALL her; but I don't have it. (call)

THIRD CONDITIONAL

• We use the third conditional to talk about impossible situations, as in the second
conditional, in the past. We often use the third conditional to describe regrets.
The structure is:
• If + past perfect, would have + past participle:
• If I had studied hard, I would have passed the exam.
• If Gary had been free yesterday, I would have invited him.
• Their clients would have gone out if they had not cooked well.
• If you hadn’t forgotten her birthday, she wouldn’t have been upset.
• If they had booked earlier, they could have found better seats.
1. If the weather HAD BEEN (to be) nice, they WOULD HAVE PLAYED (to play) football.
2. If we HAD GONE (to go) to a good restaurant, we WOULD HAVE HAD (to have) a better dinner.

MIXED CONDITIONAL: SECOND AND THIRD

• We use this combination to talk about a hypothetical condition happening in the past (third conditional) with a
present result (second conditional).
• Form: We use past perfect in the if clause and would/could/might + infinitive in the main clause.
• Examples:
• If I had been elected, I would be the president now.
• If I had won the lottery, I would be rich.
• I might have a better job now if I hadn’t dropped out of school.
• If I had passed my English exam last year, I would be working in England right now.
• They’d (They would) have much more confidence if they hadn’t lost so many matches.
• What would you be doing now if you hadn’t decided to study?
MIXED THIRD/SECOND CONDITIONAL

• We use this combination to talk about a hypothetical condition happening in the present (second
conditional) with a past result (third conditional).
• Form: We use past in the if clause and would/could/might + have + past participle in the main clause.
• Examples:
• f I were a man, they would have given me the job.
• If I didn’t have so much work, I would have gone to the party last night.
• I would have understood them if I spoke German.
