GUIDELINES FOR WRITING BIOLOGY LABS

1. Labs should be written in the following format:


● Lab number
● Date
● Title
● Aim
● Apparatus and Materials
● Diagram (if necessary)
● Method
● Results and Observations
● Discussion
● Precautions
● Limitations
● Sources of Error
● Reflection
2. Each page with writing should be numbered
3. Do no use I, me, he, she we etc in any part of the lab except for reflection.
4. Drawing should be done on the pages with no lines
5. Graphs should be done on graph paper and stuck into labs.
6. Lab should be written in pen.
7. Drawings and graphs should be done in pencil.

Guidelines for drawings

1. All drawings should be done on clear pages (pages without lines)


2. Drawings MUST be done in pencil
3. Drawings MUST take up at least half of the page
4. Drawings MUST have a TITLE, title must be written in pencil, in CAPITAL letters and underlined.
5. A magnification should be written next to the title, magnification is written (MAG x ). Magnification is
calculated size of drawing divided by size of specimen.
6. Label Lines must be drawn in pencil using a ruler and must end at the same distance away from
drawing.
7. Labels must be written in pencil and capital letters
8. Labels must be accompanied by annotations, annotations must be written in brackets next to each label
and must be written in lower case letters). Annotations are the functions of the part that is labelled.
9. Label lines must not cross
10. There should be no shading and no stippling in drawings
11. Drawings must be done neatly with clear smooth lines.

Guidelines for graphs

1. Graphs must be done on graph paper


2. Graph must take up at least half of the page
3. Each graph MUST have a title; title must be written in pencil, in capitals and underlined. Graph must be
below graph.
4. Graphs must have a scale that is written at the top right hand corner in pencil
5. Axes must be labelled, the label must contain the variable and the unit.
6. Trend line must be in pencil and be a best fit line.
