HSB SBA Draft - 1

The document outlines a school-based assessment for Human and Social Biology conducted by students at Tagore Memorial Secondary School in Guyana. The research aims to determine if athletes have a faster reaction time to stimuli compared to non-athletes, motivated by observations during evacuation drills. The assessment includes a background overview, problem statement, and research objective related to reaction times influenced by physical activity.

BACKGROUND/OVERVEIW
A stimulus can refer to a signal or change in the environment that triggers a
physiological response in an organism. For example, a sudden change in
temperature can act as a stimulus that prompts the body to shiver or sweat
to regulate its temperature. Reaction time is defined as the time elapsing
between the beginning of the application of a stimulus and the beginning of
an organism's reaction to it. (Merriam Webster Dictionary). It was observed
by the researchers that students who are athletes or are regularly engaged
in physical activities react faster to the evacuation drill(stimulus) which is
usually conducted once per month at the school. This motivated the
researchers to conduct this research to determine whether physical activity
had anything to do with one's reaction time or If athletes react faster to
these signals, then non-athletes.
PROBEM STATEMENT

 Athletes react faster to a stimulus compared to non-athletes.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

 To find out whether athletes have a faster reaction time than non-
athletes.
