Functions Increasing, Decreasing, and Piecewise Functions ooooo

The document outlines the concepts of increasing, decreasing, and constant functions, including how to identify intervals for these behaviors and locate relative maxima and minima. It also introduces piecewise functions, which are defined using different formulas over specific intervals of their domain. Examples and problems are provided to illustrate these concepts and their applications in graphing functions.

Functions: Increasing, Decreasing, and Piecewise Functions

Objectives
 Graph functions, looking for intervals on
which
the function is increasing, decreasing, or
constant, and estimate relative maxima and
minima.
 Find the domain of the function and
function values, and then graph the function.
 Graph functions defined piecewise.

Increasing, Decreasing, and Constant Functions

 On a given interval, if the graph of a function rises from left to right, it is said to be
increasing on that interval.
 If the graph drops from left to right, it is said to be decreasing.
 If the function values stay the same from left to right, the function is said to be
constant.
Definitions
 A function f is said to be increasing on an
open interval I, if for all a and b in that interval,
implies .

 A function f is said to be decreasing on an

open interval I, if for all a and b in that
interval,

1
implies .
 A function f is said to be constant on an
open interval I, if for all a and b in that interval,
.

Relative Maximum and Minimum Values

Suppose that f is a function for which f(c) exists for some c in the domain of f.
 is a relative maximum if there exists an open interval I containing c such that
, for all x in I where .
 is a relative minimum if there exists an open interval I containing c such that
, for all x in I where .

 In other words, relative maxima are ____________________________,

 while relative minima are ______________________________.

 Please notice that is an output of the function.

 A maximum or minimum occurs at a point

Example: Identify intervals on which a function increases, decreases, or is constant..

Solved Problem Pencil Problem

a. State the intervals on which the given b. State the intervals on which the given
function is increasing, decreasing, or function is increasing, decreasing, or
constant. constant.

3
Example: Use graphs to locate relative maxima or minima.
a. Look at the graph below.
Locate values at which the function f has any relative maxima or minima.
What are these relative maxima or minima?

b. The graph of a function f is given below.

Locate values at which the function f has any relative maxima or minima.
What are these relative maxima or minima?
Read y-values from the graph, as needed, since the equation is not given.

c. The graph of a function f is given at the
right.

 Determine the intervals over which the

function in the figure below is
increasing, decreasing, and constant.

 Locate values at which the function f

has any relative maxima or minima.

 What are these relative maxima or minima?

Read y-values from the graph, as needed,
since the equation is not given.

 What are the domain and range of the above function?

Functions Defined Piecewise
 Some functions, in order to be more accurate models, are defined in chunks, or “pieces”
over the given domain, in order to fit a particular shape or characteristic.
 This usually means that different output formulas are needed for different parts of the
function’s domain (its inputs).
 Functions that are defined in the way are called piecewise functions.
 Such functions are defined piecewise using different output formulas for different parts
of the domain.
