Lesson 2: Basic Greetings & Introductions

Lesson Objectives:

 Learn common greetings used in English.

 Introduce yourself and ask for someone’s name.

 Respond to introductions politely.

 Understand formal and informal greetings.

1. Common Greetings

In English, people greet each other differently depending on the time of day and the
relationship they have.

A. Basic Greetings (Any Time of the Day)

Greeting Meaning Example

Hello A general greeting Hello, how are you?

Hi Informal version of “Hello” Hi, nice to see you!

Hey Very informal greeting Hey, what's up?

Good morning Used in the morning (before 12 PM) Good morning, John!

Good afternoon Used in the afternoon (12 PM - 6 PM) Good afternoon, teacher!

Good evening Used in the evening (after 6 PM) Good evening, Mr. Smith!

📢 Note: “Good night” is not a greeting. It is used when leaving or before going to sleep.

✅ Example: Good night, see you tomorrow!

B. Asking & Responding to "How Are You?"

Question Possible Answers

How are you? I’m fine, thank you.

How are you doing? I’m doing well.


Question Possible Answers

How’s it going? (Informal) It’s going great! / Not bad.

What’s up? (Very informal) Not much. / Just working.

✅ Example Conversations:

1️⃣ Formal

 A: Good morning! How are you?

 B: Good morning! I’m fine, thank you. And you?

 A: I’m good, too.

2️⃣ Informal

 A: Hey! What’s up?

 B: Not much. Just relaxing. How about you?

 A: Same here.

2. Introducing Yourself & Others

When meeting someone for the first time, you introduce yourself by saying your name and
sometimes other details.

A. Introducing Yourself

Phrase Example

My name is… My name is Mohamed.

I’m… I’m Sarah.

I am from… I am from Kenya.

Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you!

It’s a pleasure to meet you. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. David.

✅ Example Conversation:

 A: Hello! My name is Zamzam. What’s your name?

 B: Hi Zamzam! I’m Mohamed.


 A: Nice to meet you, Mohamed.

 B: Nice to meet you too.

B. Introducing Someone Else

If you want to introduce a friend or colleague, you can use these phrases:

Phrase Example

This is… This is my friend, Cadar.

Meet… Meet my brother, Abdirahman.

Let me introduce you to… Let me introduce you to my teacher, Mr. Mohamed.

✅ Example Conversation:

 A: Hooyo, this is my friend, Cadar.

 B: Hi Cadar, nice to meet you.

 C: Nice to meet you too, Anab.

📢 Tip: In formal situations, shake hands while introducing yourself.

3. Formal vs. Informal Greetings

Talking to a friend Hello, how are you? Hi! How’s it going?

Business meeting Good afternoon, Mr. Ali. Hey Ali, nice to see you!

 Formal: Good afternoon, Mr. Mohamed. How are you?

 Informal: Hey Mohamed! What’s up?

Complete the sentences with the correct greeting or introduction.

Write a short dialogue between two people meeting for the first time. Use:

 A greeting
 An introduction

 A response

Cadar: Nice to meet you too!

✅ Exercise 5: Choose Formal or Informal

Decide if the greeting is formal (F) or informal (I).
