The document provides an introduction to differential equations, defining key concepts such as ordinary and partial differential equations, their order and degree, and classifications into linear and nonlinear equations. It emphasizes that the focus will be on ordinary differential equations and discusses the nature of explicit and implicit solutions. Additionally, it introduces first-order ordinary differential equations and presents Picard's Theorem regarding the uniqueness of integral curves through points in a specified rectangle.

1 Introduction
1.1 Classification of Differential Equations
Definition 1.1 (Differential Equations). An equation involving one dependent variable
and its derivatives with respect to one or more independent variables is called a differential
equation,
Example 1.1. Following are examples of differential equations

Definition 1.2 (Ordinary Differential Equation). An ordinary differential equation (ODE)
is one in which there is only one independent variable
From the definition of ordinary differential equation, it follows that all the derivatives
occurring in it are ordinary derivatives.
Definition 1.3 (Partial Differential Equation). A differential equation involving partial
derivatives of the dependent variable with respect to more than one independent variable
is called a partial differential equation.
Example 1.2. The differential equations appearing in Example 1.1 are all instances of
+
ordinary differential equations. The differential equation vis an example of a
partial differential equation,
Note 1. In these lectures we shall discuss only ordinary differential equations, and so the
word ordinary will be dropped.
Definition 1.4 (Order of the Differential Equation). The order of the highest oxdered
Acrivative involved in a differential equation is called the order of the differential equation.
Example 1.3. In Example 1.1, the order of the differential equations (1.1), (1.2), (1.3)
and (1.4) are respectively 2, 4, 2 and 2.
Definition 1.5 (Degree of the Differential Equation). If a differential equation has the
form of an algebraic equation of degree k in the highest derivative, then we say that the
given differential equation is of degree k.
Example 1.4. In Example 1.1, the degree of the differential equations (1.1), (1.2), (1.3)
and (1.4) are respectively 1, 1, 1 and 3.Introduction Aquil Khan
Definition 1.6 (Linear and Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equation). A linear ordinary
differential equation of order n, in the dependent variable y and the independent variable
