Form 2 ICT Term 1 Week 1 - Output Devices and Their Uses

The document discusses output devices in computers, explaining their purpose and identifying common types such as monitors, speakers, and printers. It outlines the process of how data is entered, processed, and outputted, as well as defining key terms related to data and processing. Additionally, it distinguishes between temporary and permanent output, focusing on CRT and TFT monitors as examples.

Topic: Output Devices and their

Uses
CLASS: FORM 2 WEEK 1

SUBJECT : ICT THEORY NOTES

TOPIC: OUTPUT DEVICES AND THEIR USES

Lesson objectives
To be able to:
1. Know the purpose of output devices in the computer

2. Identify some output devices

3. Identify CRT and TFT monitors and understand their uses

3
Output devices

Introduction
• We enter row data in the computer using hardware devices called input devices and
get processed data from the computer using hardware devices called output devices.

• Output devices are one of the four main components of computer hardware

• “Read about how a computer works in the next 2 slides (no need to copy notes in
slide 4 and 5)”

4
How a computer works

➢Data is entered in the computer using input devices such as keyboard,

mouse
➢Row data is processed by the CPU (processor) with the help of
programs/software
➢Processed data (also called information or output) is send back to the user
through output devices such as monitor, speakers
➢Processed data/information can be stored in the computer (when needed
for future use)using storage devices such as hard disk, flash drives, pen
drives

Description of key terms
1. Data: Raw facts that have little meaning to the user. Data can be text,
numbers, images, videos. Raw data in the computer is also called input
2. Processor: also called the CPU. The hardware device where data is processed
into meaningful output
3. Information: is processed data. Also known as output.
4. Storage devices: hardware devices that are used to store information.
Storage devices can be internal hardware (like hard drive) or external
hardware (such as flash drives/pen drives etc)

Output devices
What are output devices?

Definition: Output devices are hardware devices that allow processed data to
be given out from a computer. Output devices allow information to be send out
of the computer system to the user.

• Some common output devices are: monitors, Loud speakers, Printers,

Projectors, plotters

• Some output devices give out temporary output (eg, information displayed on
monitors) while others give out permanent output (e.g, printout on paper)
8
Monitors
• Monitor is the most common output device

• Monitors display information such as

➢ text

➢ images
➢ videos

2 types of monitors
1. CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor

2. TFT (Thin film transistor) monitor
