MAT391 Assignment (2024-2025 Sem 1)

The document outlines an assignment for MAT391 Engineering Mathematics III at the University of Botswana, due on October 17, 2024. It consists of five questions covering topics such as LCR circuits, Fourier series expansions, directional derivatives, verification of Green's theorem, and the Gauss divergence theorem. Students are required to work in groups of three and show all necessary steps in their solutions.

MAT391 Engineering Mathematics III
Assignment
Due date: Friday, October 17, 2024 Time: 1350hrs Venue: 252/LT002

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions. Show all the necessary steps clearly and neatly. You must work
in groups of 3 students.

1. The LCR circuit consists of a resistor R, a capacitor C and an inductor L connected in series
together with a voltage source e(t). Prior to closing the switch at time t = 0, both the charge on
the capacitor and the resulting current in the circuit are zero.

R L
t=0
i(t)
e(t) C q

Using Laplace transform determine the charge q(t) on the capacitor and the resulting current i(t)
in the circuit at time t given that R = 40Ω L = 3 × 10−3 H, C = 5 × 10−6 F and e(t) = 120V. [20]
2. The function f (x) = 1 − x is to be represented by a Fourier series expansion over the finite interval
0 < x < 2. Obtain a suitable
(a) full-range Fourier series expansion, [10]
(b) half-range cosine series expansion. [5]
(c) half-range Fourier sine series expansion, [5]
(d) Draw graphs of f (x) and of the periodic functions represented by each of the three series for
−8 ≤ x ≤ 8. [5]
3. Given φ(x, y, z) = 3x2 + 2y 2 + z 2 . Calculate
(a) the directional derivative of φ at the point (1, 2, 3) in the direction of the vector A = 2i+2j+k.
[8]
(b) the maximum rate of change of the function at the point (1, 2, 3) and its direction. [7]
4. A surface is defined by z 2 = 4(x2 + y 2 ) where 0 ≤ z ≤ 6. If a vector field F = zi + xy 2 j + x2 zk
exists throughout and on the boundary circle C, show that
I Z
F • dr = curl(F) • dS.
C S

[ This is a verification of Green’s theorem.] [20]

5. Verify the Gauss divergence theorem for F = 4xi − 2y 2j + z 2 k over the region bounded by
x2 + y 2 = 4, z = 0 and z = 3. [20]
