0 (Zero) Conditional

Expresses general truths or usual situations in the present


If + Simple Present → , Simple Present
ex. If you heat ice ,it melts. If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t learn.

1st Conditional
expresses true or very probable situation in the present or future.
If + Present Simple → Future Simple /Imperative /can/may/might/
must/should/ + bare infinitive (verb)

If it is rainy, he will take an umbrella.


If you need help, ask me .
If you do your homework, you can play out.
If you go surfing, you must take a surf board.
If you study , you’ll pass your exams.

2nd Conditional
expresses untrue or improbable situations in the present or future.
If + Past Simple → would/could/ might + bare infinitive(verb)
* ( I,he,she,it →were (not was) ex If I were rich, I would buy an expensive car
Unless = If not ex. Unless you feel well, you must visit a doctor.

If I had more free time, I would take up gardening.


If I won a lot of money, I might give some to charity.
If he studied harder, he could have good marks

3rd Conditional
expresses unreal, impossible situations in the past.
If + Past Perfect → would have + past participle
If I had seen Mary , I would have talked to her.
If you had listened to me , you would have done the right thing.
If you had asked me, I would have helped you.
