Assignment 3

The document outlines an assignment for chemical engineering students focusing on unit operations involving particulate solids. It includes calculations for terminal and hindered settling velocities of various particles in different fluids, as well as the separation of mixtures based on size and density. Specific parameters such as particle dimensions, densities, and fluid viscosities are provided for each problem.

Unit Operations Involving Particulate Solids for Chemical Engineers (CHE 454A)

Assignment-3 (2024-25 II)

1. Calculate the terminal velocity of a particle, 5 mm in diameter and of density 8022 kg/m 3 in
an oil of density 900 kg/m3 and viscosity 50 mN s/m2.
2. What is the terminal velocity of mica plates settling in an oil of density 820 kg/m 3 and
viscosity 10 mN s/m2?
Thickness: 0.5 mm
Area: 600 mm2
Density of mica: 3000 kg/m3
3. Calculate the hindered settling velocity of glass spherical particles having a diameter
1.554*10-4 m in water at 20 oC. The slurry contains 60 wt% solids. The solid density is 2467
kg/m3. The density and viscosity of water at 20 oC are 998 kg/m3 and 1.005*10-3 Pa.s.
4. Particles of sphalerite are settling under the force of gravity in carbon tetrachloride at 20℃.
What is the settling velocity of the sphalerite?
Specific gravity of sphalerite: 4.00
Specific gravity of carbon tetrachloride: 1.594
Diameter of sphalerite particles: 0.004 inch
Volume fraction of sphalerite in CCl4: 0.20
Viscosity of CCl4 at 20 oC : 1.03*10-3 Pa.s
5. Light and heavy materials are settling in the Stokes’ regime through a medium of density
1300 kg/m3. What is the ratio of their diameters? Density of the particles is 6000 kg/m3 and
7500 kg/m3.
6. A mixture of two particles ranging in size from 0.0074 cm to 0.0652 cm is to be separated by
a rising stream of water at 60℉. What velocity of water flow will give an unconditioned
product of galena?
7. A mixture of quartz and galena of a size range from 0.015 mm to 0.065 mm is to be separated
into two pure fractions using a hindered settling process. What is the maximum apparent
density of the fluid that will give this separation?
Density of quartz: 2650 kg/m3
Density of galena: 7500 kg/m3
