CSEC Mathematics Cheat Sheet with

Easy Methods & Practice Questions

1. Computation
 Tip: Multiply decimals by ignoring the point, then reinsert it after multiplying.
 Example: 2.4 × 3.5 → 24 × 35 = 840 → Two decimal places → Final answer: 8.40
 Practice: Multiply: 3.6 × 1.5

2. Number Theory
 Tip: Use the Ladder Method to find LCM and HCF easily.
 Example: LCM and HCF of 18 and 24 using ladder: LCM = 72, HCF = 6
 Practice: Find LCM and HCF of 30 and 45

3. Consumer Arithmetic
 Tip: Simple Interest: I = P × R × T ÷ 100
 Example: I = 400 × 5 × 3 ÷ 100 = $60
 Practice: Find interest on $250 at 6% for 2 years

4. Sets
 Tip: Use mental Venn diagrams to quickly find unions and intersections.
 Example: A = {1, 2, 3}, B = {2, 3, 4} → A ∪ B = {1,2,3,4}, A ∩ B = {2,3}
 Practice: A = {2,4,6}, B = {4,5,6} → Find A ∪ B and A ∩ B

5. Measurement
 Tip: Area of trapezium: ½ × (a + b) × height
 Example: Area = ½ × (8 + 12) × 5 = 50 cm²
 Practice: Find the area of a trapezium with bases 10 cm and 6 cm, height 4 cm

6. Statistics
 Tip: Sort data first to find the median easily.
 Example: List: 4, 2, 8, 1, 5 → Sorted: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 → Median: 4
 Practice: Find the median of: 7, 3, 5, 2, 9
7. Algebra
 Tip: Use patterns like difference of squares to factor quickly.
 Example: x² - 9 = (x - 3)(x + 3)
 Practice: Factorize: x² - 16

8. Relations, Functions and Graphs

 Tip: Use substitution for quick value finding.
 Example: y = 2x + 1 → x = 4 → y = 2×4 + 1 = 9
 Practice: If y = 3x - 2, find y when x = 5

9. Geometry and Trigonometry

 Tip: Use SOH-CAH-TOA for right-angled triangles.
 Example: Opposite = 3, Hypotenuse = 5 → sin A = 3/5 → angle ≈ 37°
 Practice: Opposite = 5, Hypotenuse = 13 → Find angle A

10. Vectors and Matrices

 Tip: Add vectors by adding components. Multiply 2x2 matrices by row × column.
 Example: A = (2, 5), B = (3, -1) → A + B = (5, 4)
 Practice: Add vectors: (4, -2) and (-1, 3)
