CSEC Mathematics Cheat Sheet &

Practice Questions
Computation
 Example: Multiply 2.4 × 3.5
 Easy Method: Ignore decimals: 24 × 35 = 840
Count decimal places: 1 + 1 = 2
Insert decimal: 8.40

Number Theory
 Example: Find HCF and LCM of 18 and 24
 Easy Method: Use ladder method:
| 2 | 18, 24
| 3 | 9, 12
| 3 | 3, 4
| | 1, 4
LCM = 2×3×3 = 18, HCF = 2×3 = 6

Consumer Arithmetic
 Example: Simple interest on $400 at 5% per year for 3 years
 Easy Method: I = (400 × 5 × 3) ÷ 100 = $60

Sets
 Example: A = {1, 2, 3, 4}, B = {3, 4, 5, 6}
 Easy Method: A ∪ B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}, A ∩ B = {3, 4}

Measurement
 Example: Area of trapezium with bases 8 cm, 12 cm, height 5 cm
 Easy Method: Area = ½ × (8 + 12) × 5 = 50 cm²

Statistics
 Example: Find the median of: 4, 2, 8, 1, 5
 Easy Method: Order data: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 → Median = 4
Algebra
 Example: Factorize x² - 9
 Easy Method: Recognize x² - 3² → (x - 3)(x + 3)

Relations, Functions and Graphs

 Example: Find y when x = 4 in y = 2x + 1
 Easy Method: y = 2(4) + 1 = 9

Geometry and Trigonometry

 Example: Find angle A: opposite = 3, hypotenuse = 5
 Easy Method: Use SOH → sin A = 3/5 → A ≈ 37°

Vectors and Matrices

 Example: Add vectors A = (2, 5), B = (3, -1)
 Easy Method: A + B = (5, 4)
Matrix multiplication: A = |1 2| |3 4|
|5 6| |7 8|
A × B = |17 20|
|57 64|
