Sheet # 1
Information and Channel Capacity

1- A binary channel matrix is given by:

𝟐 𝟏
𝒚 𝟑 𝟑
𝑷𝒚 𝒙 = 𝟏
𝒙 𝟗
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎
This means 𝑷𝒚 (𝒚𝟏 /𝒙𝟏 ) = 𝟐/𝟑, 𝑷𝒚 (𝒚𝟐 /𝒙𝟏 ) = 𝟏/𝟑, etc. You are also given that 𝑷𝒙 (𝒙𝟏 ) =
𝒙 𝒙
𝟏/𝟑 and 𝑷𝒙 (𝒙𝟐 ) = 𝟐/𝟑. Determine 𝑯 (𝒙), 𝑯(𝒙/𝒚), 𝑯(𝒚), 𝑯(𝒚/𝒙), 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰(𝒙; 𝒚).

2- Calculate the entropy of a binary source that has an equal probability of transmitting a ‘1’
and a ‘0’.

3- Calculate the entropy of a binary source only transmit a ‘1’.

4- Calculate the entropy of a binary source that transmits a ‘1’ after every 9 series of ‘0’.

5- A digital signaling system is required to operate at 9.6 kbps. If a signal element encodes a 4-
bit word, what is the minimum bandwidth of the channel?

6- Given a channel with intended capacity of 20 Mbps, the bandwidth of the channel is 3 MHz
what signal-to-noise ratio is required to achieve this capacity?

7- Suppose that the spectrum of a communications channel is 3 MHz to 4 MHz Suppose also
that the SNR is 24 dB:

I. Find the channel capacity.

II. If there were no noise, how many signal levels would be needed to achieve the above
channel capacity of 8 Mbps?

8- In a digital communication system, the received power to noise-power spectral density (S/N0)
is 51.77 dB-Hz, the required data rate is 7.2 kbps and the available bandwidth is 4.8 KHz.
The required BER performance 𝑷𝒃 𝒊𝒔 ≤ 𝟏𝟎!𝟓 . What is the design choice of the modulation
scheme if no error-correction coding is used?

9- In a digital communication system, the signal-to-noise spectral density ratio is 48 dB-Hz, the
available bandwidth is 45 KHz and the required data rate is 9.6 kbps. The required BER
performance, 𝑷𝒃 𝒊𝒔 𝟏𝟎!𝟓 . What is the design choice of the modulation scheme if no error-
correction coding is used?

Sheet # 2
Multiplexing and Multiple Access
(FDM/FDMA and TDM/TDMA)

1- Design a FDM signal set consisting of five voice channels, each on the frequency range 300 to
3400 Hz. The multiplexed composite is to be made up of inverted sidebands and is to occupy
the spectral region from 30 to 50 kHz.

I. Draw the composite spectrum, indicating individual spectrum and guard band
frequency locations.
II. Draw a block diagram showing the filtering details and the required local oscillator
values.

2- Five channels, each with 100 kHz bandwidth, are to be multiplexed together. What is the
minimum bandwidth of the link if there is a need for a guard band of 10 kHz between the
channels to prevent interference?

3- If the total bandwidth is 12.5 MHz, there are two guards for the total system each 10 kHz,
and the bandwidth for each channel is 30 kHz, find the number of channels available in an
FDMA system.

4- A multiplexer combines four 100-kbps channels using a time slot of 2 bits. Show the output
with four arbitrary inputs.

I. What is the frame rate?

II. What is the frame duration?
III. What is the bit rate?
IV. What is the bit duration?

5- Show the contents of five output frames for a synchronous TDM multiplexer that combines
four sources sending the following characters. Note that the characters are sent in the same
order that they are typed. The third source is silent.
Source 1 : Hello
Source 2 : Hi
Source 3 :
Source 4 : Bye

6- Five channels are multiplexed using TDM. If first channel send 200 bytes/s, second 100
bytes/s, third 50 bytes/s, fourth 50 bytes/s and the fifth send 99 bytes/s. We multiplex 4 bits
per channel; Show the frame travelling on the link, and the bit rate for the link, the size of the
frame.
