Background Information:
So what are sorting machines? They are part of the mechanical postal revolution, meaning that
they are designed to make things easier. Manual sorting has been unable to meet the needs of
today's logistics market, and the sorting method is now moving towards automated sorting. The
use of automatic sorting equipment also solves many of the problems of traditional sorting.
Sensor-based sorting is an umbrella term for all applications in which particles are detected using
a sensor technique and rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic process.
The technique is generally applied in mining, recycling, and food processing and used in the
particle size range between 0.5 and 300 mm.
There are two types of sensor-based sorters: the chute type and the belt type. For both types, the
first step in acceleration is spreading out the particles by a vibrating feeder followed by either a
fast belt or a chute. On the belt type, the sensor usually detects the particles horizontally while
they pass it on the belt. For the chute type, the material detection is usually done vertically while
the material passes the sensor in a free fall. The data processing is done in real-time by a
computer. The computer transfers the result of the data processing to an ultra-fast ejection unit
which, depending on the sorting decision, ejects a particle or lets it pass.

In this project, our main objective is to come up with a practicable design of a pneumatic system
that can reduce the effort put into the sorting process. We also want to build a cost-effective
device that can also speed up the sorting process in the industries, with a control system that is
user-friendly. Building an environmentally friendly sorting machine is also one of our main
objectives.

Conclusion

The primary goal of this project was to create an item sorting system based on particular
criteria. This was carried out effectively as a team. We use Solidworks software to bring the
design based on our finalized idea. We made a simulation of the movement of our system to get a
better idea of how our sorting machine works. From the simulation, we knew that the extending

speed of the cylinder cannot be too fast, or else the big force will push the object far away before
dropping into the correct size box. Hence, a flow control valve is added to each of the cylinders.

There are many operations that are controlled by a PLC. The main purpose of this design
is for factory usage. So this machine can take up some big space. But with some various
improvements, we hope that we can make a portable sorting machine for domestic purposes in
the future. We believe that a piston arrangement can be used to improve the sorting process
because some features such as the sorting systems are based on the shape and weight of the
object. These are our future plans for this sorting machine.

We have applied what we learned from our classes to this project. The theories that were
taught to us were applied in this project as a piece of practical knowledge through software
simulations. We were able to use software such as SolidWorks, OpenPLC, CODESYS, Autosim,
and many more to create this sorting machine simulation. We were able to gain so much
knowledge by being able to use that software. We can conclude this report by saying that we
have taken this project as a milestone where we have learned many new things. Thank you.
