Problem 1:
Estimate the quantities of all major items of work of a one storied residential building with a boundary wall
as per the following details:
• The typical floor plan of the building is given in Figure 1.1.
• A sectional elevation cut through A-A′ is shown in Figure 1.2
• Assume a boundary wall with iron gate along the perimeter of the property, with a clear space of
approx. 3 m on all four sides. The plan and cross-section of the boundary wall is provided in Figure 1.3
• The structural components of the building can be designed or assumed reasonably. Typical c/s view of
foundation and superstructure are provided in Figure 1.4 and Figure 1.5 respectively.
• Items of work may include but not limited to the following:
• Earthwork in excavation of foundation trenches (Unit - m3)
• Earthwork in filling in foundation trenches and plinth with good earth (Unit - m3)
• Single brick soling (unit - m2)
• Cement concrete for foundation, tie beam, slabs, beams, columns, lintels etc, excluding shuttering and
reinforcement (unit – m3)
• Brickwork in cement sand mortar in plinth and super structure (unit– m3)
• Shuttering with centering and staging (unit – m2)
• Reinforcement for RCC work in slabs beams columns lintels etc. including distribution bars stirrups
binders etc. (unit – Quintal/kg/tonne)
• Plaster to wall and ceiling with sand and cement mortar. (Unit – m2)
• Flooring (unit- m2)
• Tiles (Unit – m2)
• Woodwork in door and window frame, (Unit – m3)
• Panel shutters of doors and window (Unit – m2)
• MS ornamental grill with welding in window railing etc. (Unit – m2)
• Colour washing with ordinary pigment or with decorative cement base paint. (Unit - m2)
• Painting to wood and steel surfaces. (Unit - m2)
• A sample measurement form is given in Table 1. All other items, if not available, can be reasonably
assumed and categorically mentioned in the remark’s column.
• Doors – D = 1200 X 2100; D1 = 1000 X 2100; D2 = 800 X 2100
• Windows – W1 = 1200 X 1200; W2 = 700 X 1200; W3 = 500 X 500
• Exterior wall: 250 mm; Interior wall: 125 mm. The foundation of the building can be assumed to
consisting of isolating RCC footing. There may be tie beams at the foundation level as well as at the ground
level.
• Assume position of beams (including lintel beam of 150 mm) and columns appropriately. All
dimensions in mm, unless specified otherwise.

Limits of measurement and degrees of accuracy in Estimating

During preparation of an estimate of main head, smaller dimensions in its various sub-heads shout not be neglected as those affect the total quantity of main head.
No approximation should be made after omitting fractional dimensions either directly from the drawings or from those determined from the plan.
1. Limits of measurement according to SP: 27-1984
(a) Dimensions shall be measured to the nearest 0.01 m except for
(i) thickness of slab or R. C. slab which shall be measured to, nearest 0.005 m;

7
(ii) Woodwork to nearest 0.002m;
(iii) Steelwork to nearest 0.001m; reinforcement to nearest 0.005 m;
(iv) thickness of roadwork where the thickness is less than 20cm: the thickness shall be measured to nearest 0.005 m.
(b) Areas shall be worked out to the nearest 0.01 m2. For steelwork areas excluding cross sectional measurements shall be worked out to nearest 0.001 m2.
(c) Cubic contents shall be worked out to nearest 0.01 cu m except for woodwork shall be worked out to nearest 0.001 cu m.
(d) Weights shall be worked out to nearest 1 kg.
(2) Rates: The degree of accuracy in calculations depends upon the rate of the item of work. Thus, where the rates are per hundred (per %) or per thousand (per
%) units, greater accuracy is not required. But where the rates are per metre (per m) or per running metre (per rm), per square metre (per sq m), per cubic metre
(per cu m) calculations should be carried out up to two places of decimal for greater accuracy at higher rate. The limits of measurement as stated above in (1)
shall be followed. Any work done by the Contractor extra over the specified dimensions shall be ignored.
