Assignment 5

The document provides information to calculate the mass of a block held in equilibrium by a spring system. It gives the stretched length of the spring, calculates the force exerted by the spring, and uses static equilibrium equations to solve for the tension forces in other components. It determines the mass of the block is 12.84 kg.

3.14 The unstretched length of the spring AB is 2 m.

If the block is held in the equilibrium position shown, determine the mass of the block at D.

Draw the free body diagram of the spring system. The angles for Fs2 is 45o and the angle for Fs1 is a 3-4-5 triangle and Fs3 is -90o

Determine the stretched length of the spring is 5 mm, so the force is s = ( l l0 ) = ( 5 m 2 m ) = 3 m Fs1 = ks = ( 30 N / m ) ( 3 m ) = 90 N

Look at the static equilibrium equations in the x and y directions and solve for Fs2 and Fs3

3.27 The lift sling is used to hoist a container having a mass of 500 kg. Determine the force in each of the cables AB and AC as a function of . If the maximum tension allowed in each cable is 5 kN, determine the shortest lengths of cables AB and AC that can be used for the lift. The center of gravity of the container is located at G.

Draw the free body diagram for the whole system to find F The weight of the container is W = mg = 500 kg ( 9.81 m/s 2 ) = 4905 N

Using the equilibrium for y direction

= F W = 0

F = 4905 N

Draw a new free body diagram to look at cables AB and BC

Using the static equilibrium for x and y directions

4905 N = 2FAC sin Rearrange the equation for the force in the cables is F= 4905 N 1 2 sin 2452.5 N = sin

F F

= FAB cos FAC cos = 0 FAB = FAC = F FAB sin FAC sin = 0

Using the equation we can find the shortest cable if the maximum force in the cable is 5000 N. F= 2452.5 N 2452.5 N = sin 1 sin F

2452.5 N 0 = sin 1 = 29.37 5000 N Compute the length of the cable L= 1.5 m 1.5 m = cos cos ( 29.37 0 )

= 1.72 m

3.38 The pail and its contents have a mass of 60 kg. If the cable is 15 m long determine the distance y of the pulley for equilibrium. Neglect the size of the pulley at A.

Draw the free body diagram. The weight of the bucket is W = mg = 60 kg ( 9.81 m/s 2 ) = 588.6 N

The cable has constant tension therefore F1=F2. Look at the x component of the static equilibrium.

F1 cos = F2 cos cos = cos

= F1 cos + F2 cos = 0

Use the geometry of the pulley system The similar triangles for the cosine components

( 15 m R ) cos = 10 m X
R cos = X 15 m cos = 10 m cos = 10 m 15 m

= 48.190

The similar triangles for the sine components

( 15 m R ) sin = Y 2 m
R cos = Y 15 msin = 2Y 2 m Y=6.59 m

2Y = 15 msin ( 48.190 ) + 2 m
