Exploring the Relationship Between Schools and Society
Objective:
To understand the relationship between schools and society and how schools
transmit cultural values.
To explain the concept of socialization and how schools play a role in this
process.
To analyze how education in schools has evolved across key periods in
Philippine and world history.
Instructions:
1. Introduction: Teacher's Discussion
o Briefly explain the concept of socialization and how both home and
school function as agents of socialization. Highlight the importance of
schools in transmitting cultural values and social norms.
o Discuss how education in primitive societies was simple and focused
on practical survival skills, passing on values such as respect,
community work, and resource management.
2. Group Activity (Research and Presentation)
Divide the class into 3 groups. Each group will research and prepare a short
presentation on how schools transmit cultural values, using examples from
Philippine history and world history.
o Group 1: Philippine History
Research and present facts on how education in the Philippines, from
the pre-colonial period to modern times, has helped shape and
transmit cultural values.
Example topics could include: The role of the Spanish education
system during colonization, The influence of the American
education system in the early 20th century, and The value of
Bayanihan (community spirit) in Philippine education.
o Group 2: World History
Research and present examples from world history, focusing on how
schools in different civilizations have transmitted cultural values.
Example topics could include: Ancient Greece and the
importance of philosophy and democratic values, The role of
education in shaping social hierarchies in feudal Japan, and The
spread of industrialization and its impact on school curricula in
the 19th century.
o Group 3: Modern Educational Systems and Socialization
Research and explain how schools in contemporary society (both in the
Philippines and globally) contribute to the process of socialization.
Example topics could include: The role of schools in teaching
respect for diversity and human rights, The importance of
socialization in teaching democracy, and The role of schools in
promoting civic responsibility and values in modern society.
3. Discussion and Reflection (Whole Class)
After the group presentations, conduct a class-wide discussion on the
following:
o How schools have evolved over time in terms of their role in society.
o How cultural values are transmitted through the education system.
o Discuss how modern schools, particularly in the Philippines, contribute
to both the preservation of cultural values and the adaptation to global
societal changes (e.g., globalization, digital literacy, etc.).
4. Writing Reflection: Ask each student to write a short reflection (300 words)
on the following:
o How does education influence the transmission of cultural
values in a society?
o What role do schools play in the socialization of children, and
how can they contribute to positive societal change?
o Provide examples from the Philippine context and global
history where education helped shape societal norms.
Expected Outcomes:
Understanding of Socialization: Students should be able to explain the
meaning of socialization and how both home and school contribute to the
process.
Cultural Value Transmission: Students will be able to identify examples
from Philippine and world history that demonstrate how schools help in
transmitting cultural values.
Critical Thinking: Students will critically reflect on how schools contribute to
shaping society, its norms, and values over time.
Materials Needed:
Internet or library access for research
Paper and pens for writing reflections
Projector/board for presentations
