Mother tongue as defined by Nishanti (2020) is the
first language one learns as a baby, the language one grows up knowing, which is also known as the native language. Origin The term “mother tongue” harks back to the notion that linguistic skills of a child are honed by the mother and, therefore, the language spoken by the mother would be the primary language that the child would learn. Significance of Mother Tongue in child’s life 1. Foundation of learning The mother tongue is a fundamental aspect of learning. It helps children transition from informal to formal education with confidence. 2. Personal, Social, and Cultural identity It is this identification we get from speaking our mother tongue that enforces successful social patterns of acting and speaking. Our diverse social backgrounds make us unique and appealing in society. 3. Instrument for intellectual development The mother tongue is an indispensable instrument for cognitive development. Using the mother tongue contributes to analytical and critical thinking skills.
4. Shapes habits, values, and beliefs
Education in the mother tongue reinforces habit formation. This shapes our values and beliefs that are anchored to our identity as individuals. 5. Preservation of Language Native language is an integral part of history, thus, it should be taught to children and preserved by passing it onto the next generation. Role of Mother tongue in Education Early Childhood Care and Education, UNESCO (2007)

It is evident that children learn best and excel in education when the medium of instruction is in their native language. MT’s influence on second language in L2 learning
1. Increase literacy (Reading and Writing skills)
Application of MT in L2 learning increases literacy among learners. Ongoing formal instruction in their first language can develop reading and writing skills. 2. Language proficiency on Mother Tongue and L2 MT as means of instruction in education strengthens proficiency in both the native language and target language. Strong proficiency in the mother tongue helps in learning L2 as it provides a solid linguistic foundation. 3. Learning a second language would be simpler when MT is the primary language of instructions
When the MT is the primary language of
instructions during primary school, it increases the ability of children to learn a second language or additional dialect. 4. Develop Bilingual and Multilingual learners If children are given the opportunity to develop their second language and other target language they emerge as fully bilingual or multilingual learners.
