CSEC Geometry and Trigonometry

Notes
1. CONCEPTS RELATED TO GEOMETRY

 - Points: A location in space.

 - Lines: Infinite in both directions. Includes parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting
lines.
 - Line Segments and Rays: Portions of lines with endpoints.
 - Curves and Planes: Smooth or jagged, flat surfaces.
 - Types of Angles: Acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex.
 - Polygons: Closed 2D figures such as triangles and quadrilaterals.
 - 3D Solids: Faces, edges, and vertices.

2. DRAWING AND MEASURING ANGLES AND LINES

 - Instruments: Ruler, protractor, compass.

 - Skills: Measuring and constructing angles, marking lengths accurately.

3. CONSTRUCTING LINES, ANGLES, AND POLYGONS

 - Parallel and perpendicular lines using compass or set squares.

 - Bisecting line segments and angles using compass.
 - Constructing triangles (equilateral, isosceles) and quadrilaterals.
 - Familiar angles: 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°, 120°.

4. SYMMETRY IN PLANE FIGURES

 - Line Symmetry: Mirror image.

 - Rotational Symmetry: Shape matches itself on rotation.
 - Order of Rotational Symmetry: Number of matches in 360°.

5. SOLVING GEOMETRIC PROBLEMS

a) Lines, Angles, and Polygons

 - Angle Types: Adjacent, vertically opposite, complementary (90°), supplementary
(180°).
 - Parallel Line Theorems: Alternate, corresponding, co-interior angles.
 - Triangle Types: Equilateral, isosceles, scalene, acute, right, obtuse.
 - Quadrilateral Types: Square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, kite, trapezium.

Angle types:
 Adjacent angles, angles at a point, complementary (sum = 90°), supplementary (sum =
180°), vertically opposite angles (equal).
Parallel lines with transversals:
 Alternate interior angles: Equal
 Corresponding angles: Equal
 Co-interior angles: Sum = 180°
Triangles:
 Equilateral (3 equal sides and angles)
 Isosceles (2 equal sides and angles)
 Scalene (no equal sides)
 Acute, right, obtuse triangles

b) Congruent Triangles

 - Congruency Tests: SSS, SAS, ASA, RHS

c) Similar Figures

 - Same shape, proportional sides, equal angles.

d) Faces, Edges, Vertices of Solids

 - Recognize these in prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, spheres.

e) Classes of Solids

 - Know the names and shapes: prism, cylinder, cone, pyramid, sphere.

6. CIRCLE THEOREMS
 - Terminology: Radius, diameter, chord, arc, segment, sector, tangent.

- Theorems:
 - Angle at centre = 2 × angle at circumference (same arc).
 - Angles in same segment are equal.
 - Angle in a semicircle = 90°.
 - Opposite angles in a cyclic quadrilateral = 180°.

7. ADVANCED CIRCLE THEOREMS

 - Exterior angle of cyclic quad = interior opposite angle.

 - Angle between tangent and chord = opposite segment angle.
 - Tangent is perpendicular to radius at point of contact.
 - Two tangents from same external point are equal.
 - Radius bisecting a chord does so at 90°.
