Transformations of Functions - Mapping Notation & Equations

Question 3: Mapping Notation

Describe, using mapping notation, how the graphs of the following functions can be obtained from

the graph of y = f(x):

a) y = f(x + 10)

b) y + 6 = f(x)

c) y = f(x - 7) + 4

d) y = 3 - f(x)

Question 4: Mapping from Equations

For each function below, describe the transformation from the graph of y = f(x), and write the

mapping rule.

a) r(x) = f(x + 4) - 3

b) s(x) = f(x - 2) - 4

c) t(x) = f(x - 5) + 5

d) v(x) = f(x + 3) + 2

Question 5: Write the Transformed Function

Write an equation in the form y = f(x - h) + k for each transformation:

a) f(x) = 1/x, translated 5 units left and 4 units up

b) f(x) = x^2, translated 8 units right and 6 units up

c) f(x) = |x|, translated 10 units right and 8 units down

d) f(x), translated 7 units left and 12 units down

Question 6: Analyze a Vertical Translation

Given the transformed graph passes through the point (4, 19), and the original function is y = x^2,

determine the vertical translation applied.

Question 7: Analyze a Horizontal Translation

The transformed graph passes through the point (5, 16), and the original function is y = x^2.

Determine the horizontal translation applied.

Question 8: Fill in the Table

Complete the table below:

Translation | Transformed Function | Mapping Rule

--------------------------|--------------------------|---------------------------

Vertical | y = f(x) + 5 |

Vertical | y = f(x) + 7 |

Vertical | y = f(x) - 3 |

Horizontal & Vertical | y + 9 = f(x + 4) |

Horizontal & Vertical | y = f(x - 4) + 6 |

Horizontal & Vertical | y = f(x + 2) + 3 |

Question 9: Parabola Translation

Let y = x^2 and let g(x) represent a translation of this function:

a) Write the equation of g(x) if the function is translated 4 units left and 5 units up.

b) State the domain and range of g(x).

Question 10: Transformation Practice

Let f(x) = |x| and g(x) = f(x - 9) + 5:

a) Write the equation of g(x).

b) Describe how the graph of g(x) differs from the graph of f(x).

c) Apply the transformations horizontally first, then vertically, to the following points on f(x): (0, 0), (1,

1), (-1, 1)

d) Apply the transformations vertically first, then horizontally, to the same points.

e) Are the coordinates in parts (c) and (d) the same? If yes, explain why. If no, explain why not.
