Slope

The document discusses the stability of slopes in civil engineering, focusing on infinite and finite slopes, including methods for analyzing slope stability such as Culmann’s Method and Bishop’s Simplified Method of Slices. It outlines various failure modes and the factors affecting the factor of safety in slope stability. Additionally, it emphasizes the use of computer programs and charts for determining critical slip circles in stability analysis.

Finite slopes
• Examples: Man made embankments, road or railway cuts.
• Rotational Slide: Soil slips along such a curved surface.
• Assumption: Slip surface is a circular arc.
• Three basic modes of failure: slope or face failure, toe failure and base failure.

Analysis of Finite Slopes with Plane

Failure Surfaces (Culmann’s Method)
Culmann’s analysis is based on the assumption that the failure
of a slope occurs along a plane when the average shearing
stress tending to cause the slip is more than the shear strength
of the soil.

• Computer programs are used to
search most critical circle
• Charts are available to minimize
computations
• Depending on slope angle, get 1
