ASSIGNMENT

The document outlines various statistical assignment problems including calculations of median, mean, mode, and probabilities related to different distributions. It also covers hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and the application of statistical tests such as ANOVA and the signed-rank test. Additionally, it addresses real-world scenarios involving product defects, medical research, and environmental measurements.

Assignment Problems

1. If the median marks of 90 students from the distribution given below is 49.

Marks 10 − 20 20 − 30 30 − 40 40 − 50 50 − 60 60 − 70 70 − 80
Number of Students 7 x 10 20 20 y 8

(a) Find the value of x and y.

(b) Find the mean, mode and coefficient of variation for the above distribution.

2. A company sells four types of wheelchairs, with type A being 40% of the sales, type B being 35%
of the sales and type C being 25% of the sales. In addition, 25% of the type A wheelchair sales are
motorized, 40% of the type B wheelchair sales are motorized, 32% of the type C wheelchair sales
are motorized. If a motorized wheelchair is sold, what is the probability that it is of type C?

3. The resistance X of an electrical component has a probability density function

 Ax(230 − x2 ) 10 ≤ x ≤ 15
f (x) = 2Ax3 15 < x ≤ 20
0 otherwise.

(a) Calculate the value of the constant A.

(b) Calculate the cumulative distribution function.
(c) What is the probability that the electrical component has a resistance between 14 and 16?

4. A manufacture of cotter clips know that 8% of his product is defective. If he sells clips in boxes of
100 and guarantees that not more than 5 clips will be defective. Use Poisson distribution to find an
approximate calculation.
(a) What is the probability that a box will meet the guaranteed quality?
(b) What is the probability that a box will fail to meet the guaranteed quality?

5. The resistance in milliohms of a copper cable at a certain temperature is normally distributed with
mean 25 and variance 1.5.
(a) What is the probability that a copper cable has a resistance between 24.2 and 24.5?
(b) What is the smallest resistance level that has a probability 0.95?

6. Compute and interpret the rank correlation coefficient for the following advertising cost and product
sales (in lakhs) of 8 companies are selected at random:

Advertising cost 16 20 27 14 80 20 60 40
Product sales 45 30 55 30 65 30 15 20

7. IC chips production (in thousands) and electricity consumption (in KW/day) for a particular week of
the company are given as follows:

IC chips production 455 358 436 502 497 528 563

Electricity consumption 268 236 247 279 305 585 300

(a) Estimate the linear regression line.

(b) Estimate the electricity consumption for the day that company produces 4, 75, 000 IC chips.
8. An urban community would like to show that the incidence of breast cancer is higher in their area
than in a nearby rural area. If it is found that 27 of 300 adult women in the urban community have
breast cancer and 15 of 250 adult women in the rural community have breast cancer. Can we conclude
at the 0.05 level of significance that breast cancer is more prevalent in the urban community?

9. The breaking strengths of 15 bundles of wool fibers have a sample mean 100.85 units and a sample
standard deviation 15 units. In addition, the breaking strengths of 12 bundles of synthetic fibers have
a sample mean 89.32 units and a sample standard deviation 10 units. At 2% level of significance, test
the hypothesis that the wool fiber bundles have an average breaking strength more than the synthetic
fiber bundles by 3 units? Assume the populations to be approximately normal with equal variances.

10. Medical researchers have developed a new artificial heart constructed primarily of titanium and plas-
tic. The heart will last and operate almost indefinitely once it is implanted in the patients body, but
the battery pack needs to be recharged about every four hours. A random sample of 150 battery packs
is selected and subjected to life test. The average life of these batteries is 4.2 hours and with standard
deviation 1.5 hours. Is there evidence to support the claim that mean battery life is 4 hours with level
of significance 0.02.

11. In an air-pollution experiment, researchers wish to determine whether the three types of instruments
yield the measurements of polluting percentage of sulfur monoxide in the atmosphere. The readings
in the following table were recorded for the three instruments

Instrument A 4 6 10 2 12
Instrument B 8 12 14 8 15 4 6
Instrument C 10 4 6 4 7 9
Test the hypothesis by using one-way ANOVA that there is a significance difference in the average
reading of these instruments at 1% level of significance.

12. Five fair coins are tossed 1200 times and results are obtained as follows:

Number of heads (x) 0 1 2 3 4 5

Frequency 40 200 350 365 210 35
Probability p(x) 0.089 0.212 0.263 0.221 0.141 0.074
Test whether Poisson distribution is appropriate for the given data at 5% level of significance.

13. A survey was conducted with 2000 students. Among them 60% students were intelligent, 45% had
an uneducated father, while 35% of the non-intelligent students had an educated fathers. Test the
hypothesis that the education of fathers and intelligence of students are independent with level of
significance 2.5%.

14. The weights of 12 people before they stopped smoking and 5 weeks after they stopped smoking, in
kilograms (kg), are as follows
Before stopped smoking 70 60 80 66 65 54 94 65 83 74 65 38
5 weeks after stopped smoking 73 69 82 71 63 54 99 69 91 74 75 41
Use the signed-rank test for paired observations to test the hypothesis, at the 0.05 level of significance,
that giving up smoking has no effect on a person’s weight against the alternative that one’s weight
increases by 4 kg after stopped smoking.

15. A machine produced a number of defective items per day. To check the randomness of the defective
items, a sample of defective items produced per day over a period of 24 days is taken and found
following results:
