Tutorial 8

The document presents a tutorial with problems related to three-phase induction motors, including calculations for slip, induced emf frequency, air-gap power, output power, and efficiency. It also discusses the effects of rotor resistance on torque and slip, as well as the impact of supply voltage drops on motor speed and losses. Each problem requires specific electrical engineering principles and formulas for solution.

1. 2 pole, 230-V,50-Hz, three phase induction motor operates at a speed of 2800 rpm. Determine (a) the
per unit slip and(b) the frequency of the induced emf in the rotor?

2. A 480-V, 60-Hz, 5O-hp, three-phase induction motor is drawing 60 A at 0.85 PF lagging. The stator
copper losses are 2 kW, and the rotor copper losses are 700 W. The friction and windage losses are
600 W, the core losses are I8OO W, and the stray losses are negligible. Find the following quantities:
(a) The air-gap power (PAG) (b) The power converted (c) The output power (d) The efficiency of the
motor

3. A 60 kW , 400 V , three phase , 6 pole , 50 Hz wound rotor induction motor has a full load slip of
0.04, when operated at rated conditions with slip rings shorted. Slip at maximum torque is 0.2.
Stator resistance and rotational losses are neglected. Find (a) Max torque and (b) Full load torque.

Rotor resistance is doubled by adding external resistance in each rotor phase. For rated power
output, find (c) slip at maximum torque (d) Full load slip (e) Full load torque

4. A 3 phase 1455 RPM induction motor drives a load requiring constant torque. In case supply voltage
drops to 90%, find what happens to motor speed and losses (Express as % increase or decrease).
Assume linear T-Speed characteristics.
