Statistics Lecture Week 3

The document covers statistical concepts including interpolation, measures of central tendency, and variability with examples involving the lengths of bolts and weights of suitcases. It includes tasks such as calculating standard deviation, median, and probabilities related to bicycle repair tasks. The document emphasizes the importance of understanding data distribution and statistical measures.

Interpolation

w
xme = L + ·r
f
L = lower limit of the class wherein xme falls
w = width of the interval
f = class frequency
r = # of items in the class interval up to the median

The cumulative frequency table below shows the length in

mm of 70 bolts. Data has been grouped in 5 categories.
length (mm) cumulative frequency
13.8 -< 13.9 8
13.9 -< 14.0 25
14.0 -< 14.1 50
14.1 -< 14.2 66
14.2 -< 14.3 70

Measures of central tendency and measures of
variability

a. Calculate the standard deviation (4 d.p.). Do not

round intermediate answers.
b. Calculate the percentage of bolts with a length within
the 1s interval (2 d.p.).
c. Compute the coefficient of variation (COV) as a
percentage (4 d.p.).
d. If median > mean, is the distribution skewed to the
left or skewed to the right?

Measures of central tendency and measures of
variability

a. Find the median (2 d.p.)

b. Find the standard deviation (2 d.p.). Do not round
intermediate answers
c. Find the percentage of suitcases with a weight within
the 2s interval (2 d.p.).
d. What percentage of measurements are within the 1s,
2s and 3s interval if data is (approximately) normally
distributed?

Bicycle repair

A bicycle repairer carries out different types of

maintenance on bicycles. At the end of a working day she
has 1 hour left. There is 1 bicycle that needs to be
repaired. For this repair three different tasks need to be
done. These tasks are labelled A, B and C. The time in
minutes needed to complete these tasks is normally
distributed: A = N (5; 0.5), B = N (15; 2.2) and
C = N (35; 3.5).

Bicycle repair

Task A is takes very few time. The bicycle repairer is

curious about the probability of his task being completed
between 5 and 6 minutes.
Task C takes a long time the bicycle repairer is interested
in the 95% time interval of this task.
1 Find the probability that completing task A takes
between 5 and 6 minutes.
2 Find the 95% time interval of task C (2 d.p.).
