Course Description
Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two-course sequence. It is a study of the structure and
function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary,
skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for
exploration of human system components and basic physiology. Emphasis is on interrelationships among
systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. This is a
transferable course intended for those seeking to complete a Bachelor's Degree.
Requisites
Required: BIOL 1406 with a grade of "C" or better within the last three years or satisfactory score on the
Biology CLEP exam. Students must be college level ready in Reading and Writing.
1. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system
covered.
2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ functions in each system.
3. Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.
4. Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
5. Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.
6. Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.
7. Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards. Locate and identify anatomical structures.
8. Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware,
physiology data acquisition systems, and virtual simulations.
9. Work collaboratively to perform experiments.
10. Demonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method
A. Critical Thinking Skills: to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and
synthesis of information;
B. Communication Skills: to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through
written, oral and visual communication;
C. Empirical and Quantitative Skills: to include the manipulation and analysis of numerical data or
observable facts resulting in informed conclusions;
D. Teamwork: to include the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others
to support a shared purpose or goal;
E. Personal Responsibility: to include the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical
decision-making;
F. Social Responsibility: to include intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the
ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
Criteria
The Dallas College Department of Biology requires monitored/proctored testing during exams
and/or high stakes assessments. In order to ensure transferability of Dallas College courses to other
institutions, proctored/monitored assessments are necessary for course integrity.
All Quizzes & Block Exams will be conducted online through Brightspace utilizing the Respondus
Lockdown Browser. Students are required to maintain an electronic device (other than an iPhone) in
which they are able to take these examinations using the Lockdown Browser without any problems.
For classes that meet in-person, students must ensure that they bring their electronic device (it's a
good idea to bring the charger as well) on days in which there is an examination scheduled. It is
recommended that students make it a habit to bring this device to every class meeting.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure the upkeep of their electronic device and to make sure all
maintenance updates are installed on a regular basis in order to avoid problems on exam day. In
addition, it is also the student's responsibility to troubleshoot any software compatibility issues with the
Lockdown Browser PRIOR to any class meeting in which it will be used. The instructor will not be able
to do this for you during class.
Cheating, collusion, or any forms of academic dishonesty will result in a zero for that exam. A
second incidence of academic dishonesty will result in an F in the class and the student and violation
being reported to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. Academic dishonesty includes
providing or receiving unauthorized assistance on an assignment via another student, the internet, AI
technology, and/or social media.
The official gradebook for the course is located in D2L Brightspace – Grades.
Syllabus/Orientation 1% 1 quiz (10 Mandatory in order to verify students are able to access and
Quiz points) take online examinations through Brightspace utilizing
Lockdown Browser, as well as to verify active student status
in class. This quiz will utilize the Lockdown Browser and will
consist of 5 multiple-choice questions covering class
policies, etc. that is spelled out in the syllabus. Students will
have 5 minutes on each attempt to take this quiz. Two
attempts will be allowed, and the best score will be kept.

Late Work
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO ASSIGNMENT DEADLINES, AND DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST
MINUTE TO COMPLETE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS.
Exams that have not been submitted by the deadline will only be extended if there is documented
proof of extenuating circumstances (death, illness, etc.). This must be communicated upon return to
class in order to honor an opportunity to make up any missed assignments. It should be expected that
the former circumstances will arise only on the rarest of occasions.
Collusion
Cheating in any capacity will result in a zero for that exam or graded activity. If there is a
second incidence of cheating, the class grade will be an F and the student will be
submitted for violations of student code of conduct.
Lab Attendance
Due to the nature of the content being learned, I highly recommend that students attend all scheduled
lab sessions. Students who fail to attend the lab sessions should expect to find the laboratory practical
exams to be a miserable experience. The method that I use to run the Anatomy & Physiology labs
relies heavily on student participation and interaction. As a result, bonus points will be awarded based
on student attendance* (approximately 1 point/lab session), and these points will be applied to the
appropriate practical exam.
* Student "attendance" at the lab implies that they actively participate in the conduct of the lab. Those
who do not participate will not receive bonus points.
