Assignment 03 Metric Space - 29542675

The document is an assignment from Sirajam Academy focused on metric spaces, containing eight problems that require the demonstration of various sets and functions as metric spaces or pseudometric spaces. Each problem presents a different mathematical scenario involving metrics defined on sets such as real numbers, bounded sequences, functions, and power sets. The assignment is to be completed within three days.

Metric Spaces
Assignment : 03 Time : 3 Days
1. Show that (X, 𝑑) is a metric space, where
X = ℝ𝑛 (𝑛 ∈ ℕ), 𝑑(𝑥, 𝑦) = max1≤𝑘≤𝑛 {|𝑥𝑘 − 𝑦𝑘 |},
for 𝑥 = (𝑥1 , … , 𝑥𝑛 ), 𝑦 = (𝑦1 , … , 𝑦𝑛 ) ∈ 𝑋;
2. Show that (X, 𝑑) is a metric space, where
X consists of all bounded sequences of real numbers and 𝑑(𝑥, 𝑦) = sup𝑛∈ℕ |𝑥𝑛 − 𝑦𝑛 |, for
𝑥 = {𝑥𝑛 }, 𝑦 = {𝑦𝑛 } ∈ X (this space is denoted by 𝑙 ∞ or 𝑙∞ );
3. Show that (X, 𝑑) is a metric space, where
2|𝑥−𝑦|
X = ℂ, 𝑑(𝑥, 𝑦) = , for 𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ ℂ;
√1+|𝑥|2 +√1+|𝑦|2

4. Let ℝX denote the set of all functions on a nonempty set X to the real line ℝ, and for 𝑓, 𝑔 ∈
|𝑓(𝑥)−𝑔(𝑥)|
ℝ𝑋 , let 𝑑(𝑓, 𝑔) = sup𝑥∈𝑋 . Show that (ℝ𝑋 , 𝑑) is a metric space.
1+|𝑓(𝑥)−𝑔(𝑥)|

5. Let X denote the set of all Riemann integrable functions on [𝑎, 𝑏]. For 𝑓, 𝑔 ∈ 𝐗, define
𝑏
𝑑(𝑓, 𝑔) = ∫ |𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥)|𝑑𝑥.
𝑎

Show that (X, 𝑑) is a pseudometric space but not a metric space.

6. Let X be a nonempty set and B(X) denote the set of all bounded real valued functions
defined on X. For 𝑓, 𝑔 ∈ B(X), define 𝑑(𝑓, 𝑔) = sup{|𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥)| : 𝑥 ∈ X}. Show that
(B(X), 𝑑) is a metric space.
7. Define 𝑑: ℤ × ℤ → ℝ by, for 𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ ℤ,

0, if 𝑥 = 𝑦
𝑑(𝑥, 𝑦) = {𝑚−1 , where 𝑚 is the positive integer such that 10𝑚−1 divides (𝑥 − 𝑦)
(𝑥 − 𝑦) but 10𝑚 does not divide (𝑥 − 𝑦).
Show that 𝑑 defines a metric on ℤ.

8. Suppose ℙ(ℕ) denotes the power set of ℕ. Define 𝑑: ℙ(ℕ) × ℙ(ℕ) → ℝ by, for 𝐴, 𝐵 ∈
ℙ(ℕ),
0, if AΔB = 𝜙
𝑑( A, B) = { −1
𝑚 , where 𝑚 is the smallest member of AΔB
Prove that 𝑑 is a metric on ℙ(ℕ).
