Figuring the Causes of Student Poor understanding to Secondary


Mathematics

Introduction:

“Mathematics plays a crucial role in the cognitive and academic


development of students, especially at the secondary level, where they are
expected to master complex concepts that serve as foundations for higher
education and future careers. However, despite its importance, many
students continue to struggle with understanding fundamental mathematical
concepts.

This persistent issue raises questions about the effectiveness of teaching


practices, the adequacy of teacher training, and the availability of
educational resources. This research seeks to explore the various gaps in
mathematics instruction at the secondary level by investigating the
qualifications and pedagogical approaches of math teachers, the adequacy
of professional development programs, and the quality of instructional
materials used in classrooms.

Additionally, it will examine how these factors individually and


collectively contribute to students’ poor comprehension of mathematical
concepts. By addressing the Math_TeacherGaps, the study aims to identify
the root causes behind student’s underperformance and provide practical
solutions to improve teaching methodologies, enhance teacher
competencies, and foster a deeper understanding of mathematics among
secondary students. This longer version goes deeper into the scope of the
research, touching on specific factors like teacher qualifications, training, and
instructional materials, while also emphasizing the significance of addressing
these gaps to improve student outcomes.

Literature Review:
Recent Studies show that in the Philippines, 36% of students (the largest
share) were in the bottom when it comes to knowledge in mathematics,
meaning that they were among the most disadvantaged students who took
Mathematics, Students were reported to have difficulties in mathematics
problem solving. Throughout the school years, mathematics learning
difficulties are discovered to be a prevalent and genuine issue. This is studies
show the percentage of how lacking students to grasp the idea of
mathematics, this alarms the education system and must be prioritize to
prevent further affect to individuals.

Learning, especially learning mathematics, is a sophisticated process of


thinking. Numerous aspects, including short- and long-term memory, the
capacity to retain mathematical knowledge, and the ability to perceive both
visually and spatially, are involved (Chinn, 2004). Murayama, Pekrun,
Lichtenfeld, and vom Hofe (2013) discovered that while motivation and the
application of cognitive methods predicted the rise of accomplishment,
intelligence was found to be significantly associated with achievement in the
beginning. When evaluating a student’s performance, their mindset matters
more than their lack of study skills. It is undeniable that as a teacher, one
must consider different approach to effectively teach Mathematic to
students. This research aims to figured the aspects and identify the causes of
the Student poor skills in studying Mathematics, a conclusion will be made
after to suggest possible solutions within the causes found.

Research Design

This study is a descriptive research design used to examine a person, group,


community or institution. Researchers often use a bounded theory approach
that confines the case study in terms of time or space. Case studies
generally provide more qualitative data as opposed to quantitative data, and
that makes them an invaluable tool for gathering insight into complex topics
(CopyPress, 2023). This study is suggested to be used in order to find the
result needed to identify the causes accurately and provide a better
resolution. This study will focus on Angat National Highschool, with the target
population of Highschool students from gr7 to gr10, in the year 2024-2025

Instrumentation and Pilot Testing

This research will use Structured interview approach in order to gather


information effectively. Researcher will use a formal series of questions that
will be conducted using a standardized procedure, this series of questions
will be studied thoroughly and various studies will be considered to this
matter. Interviews can provide in-depth information on a research topic,
allowing for a thorough exploration of complex issues and phenomena. This
allows the researcher to obtain original and unique data directly from a
source based on the study’s requirements. (Studysmarter, 2024). After
obtaining information from the target population. The information will be
analyzed and results will be conducted.
