ME 222 Mechanisms of Machines
Assignment -2, Date: 14-04-2025

IV Semester, Section M-2

Note: Attempt all questions and submit the assignment by 21-04-2025 (Monday);
Maximum points: 100 (each question carries equal points)

1. What is instantaneous centre of rotation? How do you know the number of instan-
taneous centres in a mechanism?. State and prove Kennedy’s theorem as applicable
to instantaneous centres of rotation of three bodies. How is it helpful in locating
various instantaneous centres of a mechanism?. State and explain angular-velocity-
ratio theorem as applicable to mechanisms. What do you mean by centrode of a
body? What are its types? What are fixed centrode and moving centrode/ axode?
(10 points)

2. For the four-link mechanism shown in Fig.1, find the linear velocities of sliders C
and D and the angular velocities of links AC and BD( I-center method).(10 points)

Figure 1:

3. The crank OP of a crank- and slotted-lever mechanism (Fig.2) rotates at 100 rpm
in the counter-clockwise direction. Various lengths of the links are OP = 90 mm,
OA = 300 mm, AR = 480 mm and RS = 330 mm. The slider moves along an axis
perpendicular to AO and is 120 mm from O. Determine the velocity of the slider
when the AOP is 135°. Also, find the maximum velocity of the slider during cutting
and return strokes (I-center).(10 points)

4. Figure 3 shows the link mechanism of a quick return mechanism of the slotted lever
type, the various dimensions of which are OA = 400 mm, OP = 200 mm, AR =
700 mm, RS = 300 mm For the configuration shown, determine the velocity of the
cutting tool at S and the angular velocity of the link RS. The crank OP rotates at
210 rpm.(Velocity polygon method). (10 points)

5. The crank and connecting rod of a theoretical steam engine are 0.5 m and 2 m
long respectively. The crank makes 180 r.p.m. in the clockwise direction. When it

has turned 45° from the inner dead centre position, determine: Velocity of piston
Angular velocity of connecting rod Velocity of point E on the connecting rod 1.5
m from the gudgeon pin Velocities of rubbing at the pins of the crankshaft, crank,
and crosshead when the diameters of their pins are 50 mm, 60 mm, and 60 mm
respectively. Position and linear velocity of any point G on the connecting rod
which has the least velocity relative to crankshaft. (use velocity ploygon method)
(10 points)

6. An engine mechanism is shown in figure 5. The crank CB = 100 mm and the

connecting rod BA = 300 mm with centre of gravity G, 100 mm from B. In the
position shown, the crankshaft has a speed of 75 rad/s and an angular acceleration
of 1200 rad/s². Find: Velocity of G and angular velocity of AB, and Acceleration
of G and angular acceleration of AB. (use velocity and acceleration ploygon method
with proper scaling) (10 points)

7. Derive the Coriolis acceleration component of a body having its motion to relative
to a moving body. Make acceleration diagram and compute the slider acceleration
of figure 3. Figure ?? shows a slider moving outwards on a rod with a velocity of

4 m/s when its distance from the point O is 1.5 m. At this instant, the velocity of
the slider is increasing at a rate of 10 m/s². The rod has an angular velocity of 6
rad/s counterclockwise about O and an angular acceleration of 20 rad/s² clockwise.
Determine the absolute acceleration of the slider. (20 points)

8. Explain Klein’s construction of a slider crank mechanism ( in detailed). Compare

the velocity and acceleration with question 5. (10 points)

9. Perform a dynamic force analysis for a slider crank mechanism having crank radius r,
connecting rod length l. Find the velocity and acceleration of the slider, connecting
rod. Also find the force on each parts of the machine (explain in detailed).(10 points)
