How to get a remote job while learning new technologies?

T here are different methods and parameters to get a remote job but I
would share whatever I have done to get succeed in my career as a full-
time remote employee. I am proud to announce joined solo.io as the
Developer Advocate

It was hard at first, I was confused. What to do? Where to find

resources? How to Apply for remote jobs? There are many portals to apply or
not? But, Process matters! Slowly as I moved ahead. I found my path and
decided to work on open-source.

Consistency is the key

Remote Job Roadmap according to me:

I have prepared the above Roadmap to help you get your remote job to
succeed — When I was doing all this, There was no one to guide me or
explain all this sh*t to make an online presence or create my own brand.

I did it on my own.

You can do it too, Just follow the steps mentioned in the roadmap.

If you are still dreaming, How?

Follow the steps below:

What do I mean by creating a nice portfolio?

I’m not talking about making it beautiful or shiny adding so many
designs and stuff. No, not gonna help dude!

Make it simple and useful as much as possible.

Make it YOU more than anything.

There are various websites available online. Make full use of it.

I personally prefer — Linkedin, Peerlist, Polywork, and Linktree

Linktr.ee

Polywork page

Why do you ask? They are simple and have a nice community built
up.

Many hiring managers are quite active on LinkedIn — You can build a
nice profile by following my tips below:

Feel free to DM or comment with any doubts or concerns you may

have.

Create a clean Resume

Any resume should be One pager as much as possible!

Use a latex resume, If possible, or do check the websites I mentioned

above in the roadmap.

But, I would suggest — going through below detailed thread on

how to create a nice resume that will make you job-ready.

Master one Skill

I’m trying to make everyone aware that learning everything at once is not
going to help anyone. You need to be consistent and patient with what you
are learning and what you want to achieve. Master only a single skill that’s a
necessity. It can be anything — Development, Product Marketing, PM skill,
ML/AI, or DevOps.

Choose what you love — Pick a stack, Because if you don’t enjoy your work
then a remote job also can’t make you happy! Try to learn fundamentals at
first. Deep dive into whatever you are learning — Become knowledgeable in
your field, I’m not asking you to be an expert. While learning, Share it
publicly in the form of posts on LinkedIn or threads on Twitter.

How do share? Use images or code snippets for better engagements. If

you’re looking for technical roles or you are a developer in any sense. Try to
use hashtags like #100daysofcode, #90daysofDevOps, and many more. You
can check my blogs or content on LinkedIn or Twitter for more.

This will also help you to get a job as a Developer Relations Person.

Learn by doing
The best type of learning in this world is “learn by doing” which
means whatever you’re doing. Do it practically.

If you are watching the tutorials — Side by side create a demo or once
you have watched that video start building what you learn today.

I would suggest a plan like this,

Pick a real-world use-case

Start solving that use-case

You will get the complete project when this is solved

You will learn various things that videos or blogs can’t teach you.

It’s called as a debugging yourself.

Learn through the official docs from the companies.

Best way to learn anything according to me.

Learn in Public
Open-source, as well as this term, are quite similar. Whatever you do,
Make it publicly available.

This will benefit you in multiple ways — You have the validation of
your work. It will increase the social presence among the
communities. It will help you get in touch with various industry
experts.

How to share publicly? If you are learning something, Click a

screenshot and share it online. If you are a developer — Get code
snippets or create video tutorials or write blogs and share everywhere
possible.

Use platforms like —

Youtube刷粉丝点赞Facebook粉丝Instagram粉丝Twitter粉丝Tiktok粉

, LinkedIn, Twitter, or Polywork.

It also means learning on live streams or writing official docs.

This will help you in long run. Consistency is needed.

The more engagement from people in your industry background

more it will help you to increase networking.

Hence, More will be opportunities.

If you are solving real-world use-cases and it is helping any company’s

employee they will push your profile to manager and boom.

Start Open-Source
Contribute to Open-source via Code using Github — Start creating free
content over Twitter and LinkedIn, Provide contribution to the world
which is free is a part of open-source.

Write long content in the form of Blogs, If you are from a tech
background it’s easy to write tutorial blogs. — Contribute to
documentation

Pro tip: Search for companies hiring remotely, and Hop into their
docs or GitHub repo. Look out for issues or any places in which you
have knowledge hence, you can contribute. Some places where one
can easily contribute are — GitHub first issues or documentation.

Create open-source projects where anyone can contribute or make

them publicly available. Why? It’s helpful to everyone in the
ecosystem + provides validation for your work. This project can be
created by one skill or multiple. Projects are easily shared with
everyone and the best thing is anyone can collaborate with you from
all over the world.

Apply for Fellowships and Scholarships

There are some programs that offer you resources and ways to
contribute to remote companies as well as pay stipends in $$ for your
time and efforts.

This opportunity is particularly beneficial for those who are students

or freshers. You will get to know different tech stacks and learn
different skills from experts.

This is quite similar to what you call — Hackathons

But, more impactful and provides more opportunities in terms of

rewards and job opportunities.

There are various Fellowships and Scholarships programs in this

world launched by communities like Major League Hacking,
AnitaB.org, and many more… but I’m going to share a few
opportunities here i.e. curated by one of my friends — Saumya Singh

1. The Facebook Fellowship Program

support to a talented young scientists.

technology by Qualcomm and IIE.

[Most Important] Join Different Communities

Every company creates its own communities to get feedback and
share resources for its products. Hop into their slack, forum, or
discord servers.

Introduce yourself — Be humble and fluent about what you want them
to know about yourself.

Try to understand the product from the company, Check messages

from communities in their channels. Most importantly, Stick to the
rules and learn what is going on in the communities

People will ask doubts, You can also ask while learning. Further, You
start helping. Your contributions start here… By helping users and
people asking doubts in the communities.

Participate actively and engage with events in communities,

Maintainers and employees will start recognizing you.

Carefully read guidelines and talk politely with others.

What will you prefer as an employer?

→ Hiring a person who doesn’t know anything about the product or a person
who is actively contributing to the community as well as solving doubts.

→ A person who has knowledge of codebase and product or with one whom
they have not started proc.

Generally, At first, you will be offered a remote internship or contract

job if you are a fresher or college student.

Try to engage much as possible, Learn whatever you can.

Grab opportunities and create connections.

Networking is the key.

Communities help to learn as well as provide jobs when you

contribute actively.

Become Ambassador for your communities

Contribute to docs or repositories. Present talks, join podcasts, join

Twitter spaces and create awareness.

Talk about your favorite tech stack everywhere

Submit CFPs: What is CFP? (CALL FOR PAPER/ PRESENTATION)

Talk proposal to submit at the events, meetups, and conferences.

There are various types of talks — Lightning talks, Keynotes, Welcome

notes, Technical and non-technical talks, etc.

If your CFP gets accepted, you can get the opportunity to speak at an
international conference too.

Attend meetups and local events!!

These can help you meet like-minded folks as well as remote hires.

Don’t just attend meetups on the hook, There is a lot of hype in the
industry about events and meetups.

Try to understand your goal, and event goal and categorize it. If it
aligns with your future and career perspective then only move
forward, otherwise leave it.

Talk with not only the speakers or panels but attendees too. Try to
learn from them as well as industry experts’ talks and keynotes.

This will boost your networking too. Share on social media that you
attended meetups/events for reach.
