Motor Control Example

Start/Stop Circuit for a Motor

1.Components:

1. Green Push-Button (PB1): NO contact used to start the motor.

2. Red Push-Button (PB2): NC contact used to stop the motor.

3. Motor Starter (M1): Parent component controlling the motor.

4. Auxiliary NO Contact (M1-1): Child component for self-holding.

5. Auxiliary NC Contact (M1-2): Child component for interlocking.

1/19/2025 Chapter 2 14
Single Wire Schematics design Faculty of engineers

Working •Starting the Motor:

• Pressing PB1 energizes the motor starter coil (M1).

• M1 closes the main power contacts to supply power to the motor.

• The auxiliary NO contact (M1-1) closes to create a self-holding circuit, keeping the
starter energized even after PB1 is released.

•Stopping the Motor:

• Pressing PB2 opens the circuit, de-energizing the motor starter coil (M1).

• This opens the main power contacts, stopping the motor.

• The auxiliary NO contact (M1-1) also opens, breaking the self-holding circuit.

• Interlocking the motor: If a second motor (M2) is part of the system, the NC
auxiliary contact (M1-2) can prevent M2 from starting while M1 is running.
