STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

‘Made in Bangladesh’ – a global term that has been embedded into the economic rise of Bangladesh through
textiles. In 2021-22 fiscal year, Bangladesh has exported $42.6B worth of RMG 1 products which contributes to
the 81.8% of total export value (BGMEA, 2022)2. While we have achieved all these feats via basic textiles,
other competitions have already stepped into the medical and bio-textiles, e-textiles, soft-robotics, smart
composites and been exploring new possibilities for the future of the textiles beyond traditional uses. Lack of
expertise, technical facilities and research culture has been constraining Bangladesh to enter and consider this
turf to obtain economic sustainability. With the industry 4.0 revolution, I strongly believe that industries will
have the implementation of modern technologies and research to increase the business potential and keep up
with the growing demands. Because of this, I have decided to pursue postgraduate study in a university –
renowned for its excellence in research and prestigious graduate programs.

After completing my bachelor’s in engineering from Bangladesh University of Textiles, I joined the industry for
first-hand experience of the research and developments. With almost three years of direct involvement in this
trade, I successfully performed as a team leader of R&D and currently hold a position of a fabric technician in a
liaison office of UK brand – NEXT. Industry work has taught me to find a path by trial-error and scrutinizing
comprehensively for long-hours at a stretch. Moreover, I worked as a lecturer in Northern University
Bangladesh for 2.5 years and taught the undergraduate courses such as – Engineering drawing, Machine
Designs, Textile Physics, Automation & Control, and Microprocessor. Through my six years of profession in
both academic and industrial careers, my ability to apprehend, instruct and relate any knowledge
comprehensively has been reinforced. I am self-confident and composed to perform individual or team driven
tasks.

Last couple of years has triggered unprecedented changes in engineering research, from advanced technology
and automation focused to the biological systems and medical technology. Demand for new materials and
manufacturing process has been increasing continuously, so is the research scopes. While my skill has been
elevated, I strongly realize that surfing through this segment extensively requires higher study. This has greatly
persuaded me to focus on my academic ability and escalate it via pursuing a graduate degree. Furthermore, I
have tried to learn energy and composites from the academic materials available in the NPTEL which is run by
Indian professors from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Though it helped to accumulate theoretical
aspects of the subjects, it was too abstruse to grasp everything on my own as I lacked assistance and empirical
knowledge.

The future is all about the sustainability, achieving the goals through minimum resources and being as efficient
as possible to mitigate the carbon footprint. Bangladesh has more than a hundred green factories now and this
numbers will grow further to the points that there will be more requirements from the consumers. Aiming
towards a renewable energy source i.e., Solar, or using composites to make the roads and reinforced column of
a building, is the proof that we are now more aware, and more research is needed. I have the direct exposure in
this as an active employee of a manufacturing plant and developed a keen interest in researching composites
and energy harvesting materials. Moreover, graduate study from a facility-reach university will give me the
ideal setting to bring forth the best of me to fulfill my dream of serving towards my nation’s prosperity. I
foresee my work as a chief researcher in a prestigious organization, which is only plausible after a master’s
degree followed by a Ph.D.

At this phase of my career, I consider that my educational and technical qualifications, combined with the
scopes arising out of large-scale industrialization, have strengthened my aim to pursue Master’s in Material
Science from your university. The University of British Columbia has an eclectic gathering of professors who
are profoundly knowledgeable and equally renowned. This track would unquestionably school me with broad
and specialized skills as an outcome of laborious training in all aspects of Material Science.

Skimming through the information given on the website of UBC, I find the accomplished faculty members,
highly rewarding research facilities and the university campus impressive. This university offered a specially
designed curriculum to its students that fulfills the demands of the industries with the contemporary
innovations. The idea of an interdisciplinary lab facility shared by the graduates really enthralled me. I believe
the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AMPEL) will be the ideal setup for me to
research and collaborate with the fellow graduate students and brainstorm novel concepts.

Browsing through the information given on the website of University XXX, I am highly impressed with the
accomplished faculty members, the university campus, and the facilities the university has to offer to its
students. I also realize that the curriculum offered at this university is designed to meet the demands of the
present-day industry, covering manufacturing, production, research and development, and maintenance aspects
among others. There are as many as twenty-five research labs and 18 teaching labs in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering and I look forward to being a part of them. Given these facts, I believe that there
cannot be a better platform than this university to obtain advanced knowledge in the mechanical field. I have
come to a conclusion that the Master’s in Engineering program offered by the Department of Mechanical
Engineering at XXX University is excellently structured to match my requirements. I believe studying at your
