a) Let 𝑎 ∈ ℝ be such that the system of linear equations:
3𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 1
15𝑥 − 𝑎𝑦 = 2
has no solution. Find the value of 𝑎.
b) State whether the following is true or false:
Any two eigenvectors of an n × n real matrix are linearly
independent.
c) Show that the vectors 𝑢 = (2,4,2), 𝑣 = (5,10,5), 𝑤 = (5,12,7)
are linearly dependent in ℝ3 .
d) Let 𝑉 be a real inner product space, for 𝑢1 , 𝑢2 , 𝑣1 , 𝑣2 , 𝑣3 ∈ 𝑉
expand ⟨2𝑢1 − 4𝑢2 , 2𝑣1 − 5𝑣2 + 6𝑣3 ⟩.
e) State whether the following is true or false:
For a real m × n matrix, the eigenvalues of AT A are real and
non-negative.

b) Solve the following system of linear equations:
