Verb Tense Explained, With Examples
Present Tenses
i. Simple Present: base form of verb
o Use this for habitual actions, facts, and customs.
o Example: “I work in the library.” (Habit), “The earth revolves around the sun.” (Fact).
ii. Present Progressive: “be” verb + -ing
o Use this for ongoing actions or temporary situations.
o Example: “I am working in the library this term.” (Temporary situation).
iii. Present Perfect: “have/has” + past participle
o It connects past actions to the present.
o Example: “I have lived in Dhaka for ten years.” (Past action continuing in the present).
iv. Present Perfect Progressive/Continuous: “have/has been” + verb-ing
o It highlights ongoing or incomplete actions originating in the past.
o Example: “I have been living here for three months.” (Ongoing state).
2. Past Tenses
i. Simple Past: past form of verb
o Use for completed actions and past states.
o Example: “We drove to Chattogram yesterday.” (Completed action).
ii. Past Progressive: “was/were” + verb-ing
o It refers to past ongoing actions.
o Example: “I was working late last night.” (Ongoing past action).
iii. Past Perfect: “had” + past participle
o It indicates an action before another past event.
o Example: “They had finished the project before the deadline.” (Action completed before
another action).
iv. Past Perfect Progressive/Continuous: “had been” + verb-ing
o It indicates ongoing actions prior to another past action.
o Example: “I had been waiting for an hour.” (Ongoing past state).
3. Future Tenses
i. Simple Future: “will” + base form
o For future actions.
o Example: “We will go to Cox’s Bazar next week.” (Future action).
ii. Future Progressive: “Will be” + verb-ing
o For actions occurring over a period in the future.
o Example: “I will be studying during the exam period.” (Ongoing future action).
iii. Future Perfect: “will have” + past participle
o For actions completed by a certain future time.
o Example: “By next year, I will have graduated.” (Future action completed by a specific
time).
iv. Future Perfect Progressive/Continuous: “Will have been” + verb-ing
o For actions that will continue until a specific future time.
o Example: “By the end of the year, I will have been working here for five years.” (Ongoing
action until a point in the future).
