Practical No 8:-: Control The Speed of DC Shunt Motor by Flux Control Method
(DMT)
Course outcomes:-
Select various types of DC Motors with desired load characteristics.
Apparatus Required:-
1. DC shunt motor
2. Tachometer
3. Rheostat - 1750 Ω /0.6 A, 100Ω/5A
4. 3 point starter
5. Voltmeter - (0-300)V
6. Ammeter - (0-5)
7. Connecting wire
Circuit Diagram :-
Theory :-
As we know that the speed of a DC motor is inversely proportional to the flux per pole ,
Thus by decreasing the flux, speed can be increased .
To control the flux, a rheostat is added in series with the field winding, as shown in the
circuit diagram. Adding more resistance in series with the field winding will increase the speed as it
decreases the flux. In shunt motors, as field current is relatively very small, Ish2R loss is small.
Therefore, this method is quite efficient. Though speed can be increased above the rated value by
reducing flux with this method, it puts a limit to maximum speed as weakening of field flux beyond a
limit will adversely affect the commutation.
GOVERNMENT POLYTECHNIC AMARAVATI
EE4504: DC MACHINE AND TRANSFORMER
(DMT)
Procedure:-
1. Make the connections as per circuit diagram.
2. Keep the both, rheostat, Hi minimum resistance position.
3. With the help of armature resistance of motor adjust the applied voltage till you get the rotate
speed of motor and keep the voltage constant.
4. Switch on the supply by switching on.
5. With the help of starter, start the motor by the starter Handle by off on Position and gradually
bring it to run position.
6. Keeping the voltage applied across the m/c (armature of m/c ), Increase the field resistance,
increase the resistance of ta rheostat connecting in series in field winding.
7. The field current of motor is on decreasing the speed of motor goes on increasing.
8. Note down the reading and established it into the observation tabls.
9. Switch off the supply &disconnect the equipment.
Precautions:-
1. Do not make any loose connection.
2. Do not touch any live or wire.
3. While performing the experiment see that the main supply is off.
4. Before disconnecting the circuit please switch off.
