APE Assignment-1

Total Marks 12
Basic Questions (1*4 Marks)
1. The buck converter with a bipolar switching transistor has an input voltage of 10 V. The
switching frequency is 1 kHz. The load requires an average voltage of 5 V with a
maximum ripple of 20 mV. The maximum ripple current of the output inductor is 0.2 A.
Determine the (a) duty cycle, (b) output inductance, (c) output capacitance, and (d) output
capacitance if the switching frequency is increased to 10 kHz.
2. A buck converter has an input voltage that varies between 50 and 60 V and a load that
varies between 75 and 125 W. The output voltage is 20 V. For a switching frequency of
100 kHz, determine the minimum inductance to provide for continuous current for every
operating possibility.
3. The C´uk converter has an input voltage of 48 V. The switching frequency is 64 kHz. The
magnitude of the average output voltage is 36 V across a 9 Ω load resistor. The
maximum ripple voltage across the energy-transfer capacitor, C1, is 0.5 V. If L1 = 10mH,
L2 = 1mH, and C2 = 100μF, determine the (a) duty cycle, (b) value of the energy-transfer
capacitor and (c) peak-to-peak ripple current in L1 and L2.
4. A SEPIC circuit has an input voltage of 9 V and is to have an output of 2.7 V. The output
current is 1 A, and the switching frequency is 300 kHz. Determine values of L1 and L2
such that the variation in inductor current is 30 percent of the average value. Determine
values of C1 and C2 such that the variation in capacitor voltage is 5 percent.

Design Questions (2*4 Marks)

In each of the following question, determine the maximum switching frequency of the
device by using the data sheets provided by the following manufacturers.
Even regd. No.

Odd regd. No.

Also, use a variable frequency de-rating factor. To determine the frequency de-rating
factor, use last two digits of your regd. number as follows: (1-9)*0.1, (10-29)*0.3, (30-
49)*0.2, (50-99)*0.01. For example:- If your regd. no. is 30 then your switching
frequency will be 0.6*maximum switching frequency of the device selected. Explain how
you made your design decisions and model number (provided by the manufacturer) of the
device selected.

5. Design a buck-boost converter that has a source that varies from 10 to 14 V. The output is
regulated at -12 V. The load varies from 10 to 15 W. The output voltage ripple must be
less than 1 percent for any operating condition. Determine the range of the duty ratio of
the switch. Specify values of the inductor and capacitor, and explain how you made your
design decisions.
6. Design a buck-boost converter to supply a load of 75 W at 50 V from a 40-V source. The
output ripple must be no more than 1 percent. Specify the duty ratio, switching
frequency, inductor size, and capacitor size.
7. Design a C´uk converter that has an input of 25 V and an output of -30 V. The load is 60
W. Specify the duty ratio, switching frequency, inductor values, and capacitor values.
The maximum change in inductor currents must be 20 percent of the average currents.
The ripple voltage across C1 must be less than 5 percent, and the output ripple voltage
must be less than 1 percent.
8. i) Design a boost converter that will have an output of 30 V from a 12 V source. Design
for continuous inductor current and an output ripple voltage of less than one percent. The
load is a resistance of 50 Ω. Assume ideal components for this design.
ii) The above boost converter was designed for a 50 Ω load. (a) What is the
limitation on the load resistance for continuous-current operation? (b) What would be the
range of output voltage for a load resistance range of 25 to 100 Ω? (c) Redesign the
converter so inductor current remains continuous for a load resistance range of 25 to 100
Ω.
