2) Can two numbers have 18 as their HCF and 380 as their LCM? Give reasons [ Marks 2]
Answer :
No,
HCF is always a factor of LCM but 18 is not a factor of 380
Therefore, 18 is not a factor of 380.
3) Three runners start jogging together, and their strides measure 50 cm, 65 cm, and [ Marks 2]
80 cm respectively. What is the minimum distance each should run so that each can
cover the same distance in complete strides?
Answer :
Each runner should run a minimum distance of 5200 cm (or 52 meters) to cover the same distance
in complete strides.
4) Find a quadratic polynomial with the given numbers as the sum and product of its [ Marks 2]
zeroes respectively: √2, 1/3
Answer :
√2, 1/3
We know that the general equation of a quadratic polynomial is:
x² - (sum of roots) x + (product of roots)
x² - √2 x + 1/3
Answer :
False.
Quadratic polynomials of the form (x+a)² and (x-a)² have equal roots and the graph of these
polynomials intersects the x-axis at only one point. Therefore, the graph can still represent a
quadratic polynomial.
Answer :
Given, the pair of equations is
x + 2y - 3 = 0
6y + 3x - 9 = 0
We have to determine if the pair of equations is consistent.
We know that,
A pair of linear equations in two variables be a₁x + b₁y + c₁ = 0 and a₂x + b₂y + c₂ = 0 is dependent
and consistent, if a₁/a₂ = b₁/b₂ = c₁/c₂ and the graph will be a pair of coincident lines.
The equation 6y + 3x - 9 = 0 can be rewritten as 3x + 6y - 9 = 0
Here, a₁ = 1, b₁ = 2, c₁ = -3
a₂ = 3, b₂ = 6, c₂ = -9
So, a₁/a₂ = 1/3
b₁/b₂ = 2/6 = 1/3
c₁/c₂ = -3/-9 = 1/3
a₁/a₂ = b₁/b₂ = c₁/c₂ = 13
Therefore, the pair of equations is consistent.
7) The line represented by x = 7 is parallel to the x–axis. Justify whether the [ Marks 2]
statement is true or not.
Answer :
Given, the equation of the line is x = 7.
We have to determine if the line x = 7 is parallel to the x-axis.
The equation of the line parallel to x-axis will have the equation y = b,
Where, b can take any value.
The equation x = 7 is parallel to the y axis.
Therefore, the equation x = 7 is not parallel to x-axis.
8) A hemispherical depression is cut out from one face of a cubical wooden block [ Marks 3]
such that the diameter l of the hemisphere is equal to the edge of the cube.
Determine the surface area of the remaining solid. (Take π = 22/7)
Answer :
Given that:
Diameter of the hemisphere is equal to the edge of the cube.
So, Diameter = Side of cube = ℓ
Here, base of hemisphere would not be included in the total solid area of wooden cube.
Now,
Surface area of solid = Area of cube + Curved surface area of hemisphere - Base area of
hemisphere
Area of cube :
Here, side = ℓ
Area of cube = 6(Side)² = 6ℓ²
Curved surface area of hemisphere:
Diameter of hemisphere = ℓ
∴ Radius = r = Diameter/2 = l/2
Curved Surface area of hemisphere = 2πr²
= 2π (ℓ/2)² = 2π ℓ²/4 = πℓ²/2
Base area of hemisphere
Base of hemisphere is a circle with Radius = Radius of hemisphere = r = ℓ/2
Base area of hemisphere = πr²
= π(ℓ/2)²
= π ℓ²/4
Now,
Surface area of solid = Area of cube + Curved surface area of hemisphere - Base area of
hemisphere
= 6ℓ² + πℓ²/2 - πℓ²/4
= 6ℓ² + (2πℓ² - πℓ²)/4
= 6ℓ² + πℓ²/4
= ℓ²(6 + π/4)"
=ℓ² (6(4)+π)/(4)
=ℓ² (24 + π)/(4)
=1/4ℓ² (π+24)
Hence, Surface area of solid 1/4 ℓ² (π+24)]
9) 500 persons are taking a dip into a cuboidal pond which is 80 m long and 50 m [ Marks 3]
broad. What is the rise of water level in the pond, if the average displacement of the
water by a person is 0.04m³?
Answer :
Let the rise of water level in the pond be h m, when 500
persons are taking a dip into a cuboidal pond.
Given that,
Length of the cuboidal pond = 80 m
Breadth of the cuboidal pond = 50 m
Now, volume for the rise of water level in the pond
⇒ Length x Breadth x Height
⇒ 80 x 50 x h = 4000 h m³
And the average displacement of the water by one person
⇒ 0.04 m³
So, the average displacement of the water by 500 persons
⇒ 500 x 0.04 m³
Now, by given condition
Volume for the rise of water level in the pond = Average displacement of the water by 500 persons
⇒ 4000 h = 500 x 0.04
⇒ h = (500 x 0.04)/4000
⇒ h = 20/4000
⇒ h = 1/200
⇒ h = 0.005 m (1m = 100cm)
⇒ h = 0.005 x 100 cm
⇒ h = 0.5 cm
Hence, the required rise of water level in the pond is 0.5 cm.
Answer :
11) Find the HCF of 96 and 404 by the prime factorisation method. Hence, find their [ Marks 3]
LCM.
Answer :
12) Find the zeroes of the following quadratic polynomial and verify the relationship [ Marks 3]
between the zeroes and the coefficients: 6x² - 3 - 7x
Answer :
6x² - 3 - 7x
6x² - 7x - 3 = 0
6x² - 9x + 2x - 3 = 0
3x(2x - 3) + 1(2x - 3) = 0
(2x - 3)(3x + 1) = 0
x = 3/2, x = - 1/3 are the zeroes of the polynomial.
Thus, α = 3/2 and β = -1/3
Now, let's find the relationship between the zeroes and the coefficients:
For 6x² - 3 - 7x,
a = 6, b = - 7 and c = - 3
Sum of zeroes = - coefficient of x / coefficient of x²
α+β=-b/a
Here,
α + β = 3/2 + (-1/3) = 7/6
- b / a = - (-7) / 6 = 7/6
Hence, α β = - b/a, verified
Now, Product of zeroes = constant term / coefficient of x²
α×β=c/a
Here,
α × β = 3/2 × (- 1/3) = -1/2
c / a = (- 3) / 6 = -1/2
Hence, α × β = c/a, verified.
Thus, x = 3/2, - 1/3 are the zeroes of the polynomial.
13) Find a quadratic polynomial, the sum and product of whose zeroes are –2√3 and [ Marks 3]
–9, respectively. Also find its zeroes.
Answer :
Given, the sum of two zeros is -2√3.
Product of two zeros is -9.
We have to find the quadratic polynomial and its zeros.
A quadratic polynomial in terms of the zeroes (α,β) is given by
x² - (sum of the zeroes) x + (product of the zeroes)
i.e, f(x) = x² -(α +β) x +αβ
Here, sum of the roots, α +β = -2√3
Product of the roots, αβ = -9
So, the quadratic polynomial can be written as x² - (-2√3)x + (-9)
= x² + 2√3x - 9.
Let x² + 2√3x - 9 = 0
On factoring the polynomial,
x² + 3√3x - √3x - 9 = 0
x(x + 3√3) - √3(x + 3√3) = 0
(x - √3)(x + 3√3) = 0
Now, x - √3 = 0
x = √3
Also, x + 3√3 = 0
x = -3√3
14) Solve the following question—Aftab tells his daughter, “Seven years ago, I was [ Marks 3]
seven times as old as you were then. Also, three years from now, I shall be three
times as old as you will be.” (Isn’t this interesting?) Represent this situation
algebraically and graphically by the method of substitution.
Answer :
Assume the present age of Aftab be x years and his daughter be y years.
Present age of Aftab = x years and his daughter = y years
Therefore, 7 years ago, age of Aftab = (x - 7) years and his daughter = (y - 7) years
Using this information and applying the known condition that 7 years ago, Aftab was 7 times as
old as his daughter then:
x - 7 = 7(y - 7)
x - 7 = 7y - 49
x - 7y - 7 + 49 = 0
x - 7y + 42 = 0
After 3 years from now, age of Aftab = (x + 3) years and his daughter's age = (y + 3) years
Also, Aftab will be 3 times as old as his daughter which can be represented as:
x + 3 = 3 (y + 3)
x + 3 = 3y + 9
x - 3y + 3 - 9 = 0
x - 3y - 6 = 0
Thus we have,
x - 7y + 42 = 0 ----(1)
x - 3y - 6 = 0 ----(2)
Therefore, the algebraic representation is for equation (1) is:
x - 7y + 42 = 0
-7y = - x - 42
7y = x + 42
y = (x + 42)/7
And, algebraic representation for equation (2) is:
x - 3y - 6 = 0
- 3y = - x + 6
3y = x - 6
y = (x - 6)/3
Let us represent these equations graphically. For this, we need at least two solutions for each
equation. Let's tabulate the solutions.
15) The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing the digits [ Marks 5]
is 66. If the digits of the number differ by 2, find the number. How many such
numbers are there?
Answer :
Let the digits at tens place and units place in the first number be x and y respectively.
A number can be expressed in the expanded form as 10(x) + y.
On reversing the digits, x is the units digit and y is the tens digit. The expanded notation for the
second number be 10(y) + x
As per the question,
(10x + y) + (10y + x) = 66
⇒ 11(x + y) = 66
⇒ x + y = 6 be equation (1)
Also, it is given that the difference between the two digits is 2.
x - y = 2 be equation (2) or y - x = 2 be equation (3)
When x - y = 2
Subtracting equation 2 from equation 1.
(x + y = 6) - (x - y = 2)
2y = 4
y = 2 and x = 4.
∴ The two digit number is 10x + y = 40 + 2 = 42.
When y - x = 2
Subtracting equation 3 from equation 2.
(x + y = 6) - (y - x = 2)
2x = 4
x = 2 and y = 4
∴ The two digit number is 10y + x = 20 + 4 = 24
Thus, the two digits are 42 and 24
16) The barrel of a fountain pen, cylindrical in shape, is 7 cm long and 5 mm in [ Marks 5]
diameter. A full barrel of ink in the pen is used up on writing 3300 words on an
average. How many words can be written in a bottle of ink containing one fifth of a
litre?
Answer :
Given length of the barrel of a fountain pen = 7 cm
And diameter = 5 mm
= 5/10 cm
(10 mm = 1 cm)
= 1/2 cm
Volume of the barrel =
πr²h [Since, its shape is cylindrical]
= 22/7 x (0.25)² x 7 (radius = 0.25 cm)
= 22 x 0.0625 = 1.375 cm³
Also given volume of ink in the bottle
= 1/5 of litre
= 1/5 x 1000 cm³
= 200 cm³ (1 litre = 1000 cm³)
Now 1.375 cm³ ink is used for writing number of words = 3300
∴ 1 cm³ ink is used for writing number of words
= 3300 / 1.375
∴ 200 cm³ ink is used for writing number of words
= 3300 / 1.375 x 200
= 480000
Answer :
18) Find the zeroes by factorisation method and verify the relations between the [ Marks 5]
zeroes and the coefficients of the polynomial: 2s² - (1 + 2√2)s + √2
Answer :
Given, the polynomial is 2s² - (1+ 2√2)s + √2.
We have to find the relation between the coefficients and zeros of the polynomial
Let 2s² - (1+ 2√2)s + √2 = 0
On factoring,
2s² - s - 2√2s + √2 = 0
2s² - 2√2s - s + √2 = 0
2s(s - √2 ) - 1(s - √2) = 0
(2s - 1)(s - √2) = 0
Now, 2s - 1 = 0
2s = 1
s = 1/2
Also, s - √2 = 0
s = √2
Therefore,the zeros of the polynomial are 1/2 and √2.
We know that, if 𝛼 and ꞵ are the zeroes of a polynomial ax² + bx + c, then
Sum of the roots is 𝛼 + ꞵ = -coefficient of x/coefficient of x² = -b/a
Product of the roots is 𝛼ꞵ = constant term/coefficient of x² = c/a
From the given polynomial,
coefficient of x = -(1+2√2)
Coefficient of x² = 2
Constant term = √2
Sum of the roots:
LHS: 𝛼 + ꞵ
= 1/2 + √2
= (1 + 2√2)/2
RHS: -coefficient of x/coefficient of x²
= -[-(1+2√2)/2]
= (1 + 2√2)/2
LHS = RHS
Product of the roots
LHS: 𝛼ꞵ
= (1/2)(√2)
= √2/2
RHS: constant term/coefficient of x²
= √2/2
LHS = RHS
Therefore, the zeros of the polynomial are ½ and √2. The relation between the coefficients is -b/a =
(1+2√2)/2 and c/a = √2/2.
19) Find a quadratic polynomial, the sum and product of whose zeroes are √2 and [ Marks 5]
-3/2 respectively. Also find its zeroes.
Answer :
Given, the sum of two zeros are 2.
Product of two zeros is -3/2.
We have to find the quadratic polynomial and its zeros.
A quadratic polynomial in terms of the zeroes (α,β) is given by
x² - (sum of the zeroes) x + (product of the zeroes)
i.e, f(x) = x² -(α +β) x +αβ
Here, sum of the roots, α +β = √2
Product of the roots, αβ = 3/2
So, the quadratic polynomial can be written as x² - √2x - 3/2.
The polynomial can be rewritten as (1/2)[2x² - 2√2x - 3].
Let 2x² - 2√2x - 3 = 0
On factoring the polynomial,
2x² + √2x - 3√2x - 3 = 0
√2x(√2x + 1) - 3(√2x + 1) = 0
(√2x - 3)(√2x + 1) = 0
Now, √2x - 3 = 0
√2x = 3
x = 3/√2
Also, √2x + 1 = 0
√2x = -1
x = -1/√2

24) Amit is planning to buy a house and the layout is given below. The design and [ Marks 4]
the measurement has been made such that areas of two bedrooms and kitchen
together is 95 sq.m.
Based on the above information, answer the following questions:
i) Form the pair of linear equations in two variables from this situation.
ii) Find the length of the outer boundary of the layout.
iii) Find the area of each bedroom and kitchen in the layout.
iv) Find the area of living room in the layout.
v) Find the cost of laying tiles in kitchen at the rate of Rs. 50 per sq.m
Answer :
i) Given:
Length = 15 m
x+2+y=15
x+y=13 ... (1)
Also, given that:
Area of two bedrooms + Kitchen = 95 square meter
2(5×x)+5×y=95
10x+5y=95
Dividing both sides by 5:
2x+y=19 ... (2)
From (1):
x+y=13
y=13−x
Putting value of y in (2):
2x+y=19
2x+(13−x)=19
2x−x=19−13
x=6
Putting x=6 in (1):
y=13−x
y=13−6
y=7
Thus, x=6 m and y=7 m.
Now,
Area of bedroom = 5 × x = 5×6 = 30m²
Area of kitchen = 5 × y = 5×7 = 35m²
